BOX SCORE Loretto, Pa. - The Saint Francis men's soccer team (7-4) scored four unanswered goals to build a 4-0 lead, then hung on for a 4-2 victory over NJIT (7-3-2) on Tuesday in its final non-conference tune-up before conference play begins on Sunday.
Moore's Reaction
"It was a good team performance," said head coach
Antony Moore. "We knew we had to bounce back from our loss on the weekend and we were able to do that so I am very pleased."
Turning PointÂ
The Red Flash turned an even, scoreless game after 30 minutes into a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes with goals by
Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township),
Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) and
Leonardo Ribeiro (Florence, Italy/Liceo Linguistico "G Pascoli").
Highlights
- The Red Flash got on the scoresheet in the 31st minute. Freshman Gabriel Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lausanne Collegiate School) received a pass on the wing and lofted a cross to junior Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) at the far post. Canineu showed nice composure in laying off a pass for Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) who buried from sixth yards out for his tenth goal of the season.
- Freshman Christian Kirchhoff (Aarhaus, Denmark) nearly put Saint Francis in front 2-0 moments later, ripping a left-footed shot from 25 yards out off the post.
- Freshman Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) doubled the score in the 36th minute. The Highlanders turned over the ball in the midfield and Rosa dribbled at the back four before unleashing a dipping shot from 30 yards out into the top corner.
- Freshman Leonardo Ribeiro (Florence, Italy/Liceo Linguistico "G Pascoli") capped the first-half scoring with a 40th minute goal. Sophomore Kyle Moerschbacher (State College, PA/State College) dribbled at a Highlander defender and squared the ball into the box for Ribeiro who out-muscled a defender and slotted into the vacant.Â
- Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) gave Saint Francis a 4-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season in the 54th minute. It was Kiernan who created the initial opportunity, forcing an NJIT defender to foul him in the box. He then sent his penalty attempt into the bottom right-hand corner to close the scoring for the Red Flash.
- NJIT forward Mamadou Guirassy made the score 4-1 in the 64th minute with his nation-leading 12th goal of the season.
- The Highlanders added a second goal just 33 seconds later to cut SFU's lead to 4-2 with over 25 minutes to play, but the Red Flash held the Highlanders off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
