LORETTO, PA- Saint Francis placed three players over 20 digs but dropped a tough four-set match to Central Connecticut on Friday night inside DeGol Arena.
The Blue Devils prevailed 22-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-20 over the Red Flash on Friday as they move to 10-3 in the NEC while Saint Francis falls to 12-14 overall and 6-7 in conference.
FIRST SET RECAP
- The Red Flash jumped out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to a service run by Lauren Williams that included an ace
- SFU never gave up that lead the entire set, as CCSU closed to within one at 8-7, but got no closer
- Lambert and Kelsey Roush each had five kills in the first set
- Saint Francis led by as many as five and an Emily Marcinowski kill closed out the set at 25-22
SECOND SET RECAP
- The teams went back and forth in the early stages of the set with neither team leading by more than two
- SFU got kills from Roush, Marcinowski and Cecilia Esposito as part of a 5-1 run to lead 14-10
- CCSU countered out of a timeout with an 8-0 run to lead 18-14
- The Red Flash chipped away at the lead, tying the match at 22 and again at 23 and 24 on kills from Lambert
- CCSU would answer back with kills on back-to-back plays to close out the set at 26-24
THIRD SET RECAP
- The third set was another back and forth battle that saw 12 ties
- Neither team led by more than one until SFU rattled off four-of-five to lead 14-11, thanks to a trio of Roush kills
- The Blue Devils would rally to tie the match at 16 and again at 18 and 20
- The turning point of the set was at 20-20 when CCSU won a pair of points
- SFU would rally to tie the match back at 22 on a Lambert kill but CCSU got two kills and a block error by the Red Flash gave CCSU set three at 25-22
FOURTH SET RECAP
- The Blue Devils used the momentum from the end of the third to get on a run to start the fourth, leading 7-2 and forcing a timeout
- The Red Flash were playing catch-up all set, and closed to within two at 15-13 on a Marcinowski kill
- The Blue Devils would again see the Red Flash trim their lead, a Roush kill and a combo block cut the lead to 19-18 but SFU could not draw even
- Four-straight CCSU points put the set out of reach at 23-19 as the teams traded points until CCSU closed out the match at 25-20
The Red Flash are back at it tomorrow as they close out the season with senior night against the Bryant Bulldogs. SFU will honor their five seniors with a pre-game ceremony, first serve is set for 5 p.m.
