Balanced Effort Helps Flash Overthrow Monarchs

FAIRFAX, VA- Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) led the Red Flash in scoring for the second-straight day and SFU got a balanced effort across the board in a 79-68 triumph over Old Dominion in the final game of the WNIT for both teams.
 
The Red Flash had seven players score at least seven points and SFU turned 19 turnovers into 20 points in the win.
 
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash got hot early in the first quarter with Kroll and Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) draining threes to force a ODU timeout
  • A Kovatch jumper brough the lead out to double digits at the first quarter media timeout
  • Threes by Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) and Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) highlighted a 10-0 run over the final 2:32 of the quarter gave the Red Flash a 26-8 lead after the opening 10 minutes
 
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • SFU happily traded baskets with the Monarchs at the opening of the second, maintaining their 18-point lead
  • ODU would cut the lead down to 13 on a pair of threes, taking the teams into the media timeout
  • Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) hit a key shot from beyond the arc ended the run
  • A Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) three stretched the lead back out to 17 as a great pass from Harrison fueled the transition three
  • The Red Flash would take a 39-22 lead into the locker room
 
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • The Monarchs started the quarter hot, but threes from Zezza and Leah Morro answered as the Red Flash maintained their lead
  • Morrow, Kroll and Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) each had a steal and a bucket in another 10-0 run that forced a ODU timeout and put the game out of reach at 60-35
  • A jumper by Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) and another by Morrow helped the Red Flash hit the high-water mark of a 28-point lead in the quarter
  • SFU led 66-40 after three quarters
 
FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • Smith and Kroll each hit threes in the early stages of the quarter to keep the lead over 20
  • Saint Francis took their foot off the gas with ODU closing out the game on a 14-3 run over the final five minutes to close out the scoring
 
Kroll led three Red Flash players in double figures with her 17, Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) was the only other player in double figures with 10. But five others: Morrow (9), Smith (9), Kovatch (8), Zezza (7), Thomas (7) scored at least seven points in the balanced effort. Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to help the Red Flash own a 20-6 edge in second-chance points. Zezza also added a game high three blocks and three steals.
 
The win moves SFU to 1-2 on the season, they will play Seton Hill on Tuesday in their home opener and the second annual Education Day. Tip time is set for 11 a.m.
