Red Flash School Griffins on Education Day

LORETTO, PA- Saint Francis scored the first 18 points of the game and placed four players in double figures to knock off the Seton Hill Griffins 103-71 on the second annual education day at DeGol Arena.

The Red Flash welcomed in over 600 elementary school students from local schools, starting with a career day assembly and ending with a post-game autograph session.

"I have been one of those kids in the stands at their first college game, I know how exciting that can be," Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) said afterwards. "It's a lot of fun to feed off their energy and we play at our best when we are having fun."

FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash scored the first 18 points of the quarter
  • The SFU defense forced five turnovers during the run
  • Harrison and Maya Wynn (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) each hit a three to force a Seton Hill timeout
  • The Griffins regrouped out of the timeout and outscored the Flash 14-10 after the early run
  • SFU led 28-14 at the end of the first quarter

SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • A pair of threes by the Griffins got the SFU lead down to just six at 30-24, capping a 10-2 run
  • A 6-0 personal run by Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) stretched the lead back out to double figures midway through the quarter
  • The Red Flash closed the half on a 9-0 run, fueled by a Kovatch three and jumpers by Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) and Wynn to close the half
  • SFU took a 53-36 lead into the locker room

THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash began to pull away in the second half, using a 12-0 run in the middle of the quarter to lead by 26
  • A three by Kovatch got the run started and was highlighted by a Thomas three and put backs by Harrison and Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric)
  • After Seton Hill cut the lead back to 20, SFU closed the third on a 16-5 run, threes by Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) and Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) highlighted the run

FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash lead hit the high mark at 37 on a Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) layup
  • A pair of free throws from Jenna Mastellone (New York City/Archbishop Molloy) put the Red Flash at 100 points and sent the crowd of 1062 into a frenzy
  • A Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) three capped the scoring as the Red Flash topped the century for the first time since their 103-100 victory at Wisconsin on November 13, 2016.
Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led all scorers with 25 points, she added four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) added 19 points and 11 rebounds while Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) also had a double double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Red Flash out rebounded Seton Hill 65-32, the 65 rebounds are the second-most in school history behind only a 66-rebound effort at Rider on December 1, 1990. It's the first time SFU has topped the 60-rebound mark since November 16, 2014 in a loss to Colgate.  Thirty-two of those rebounds were on the offensive end, leading to 32 second-chance points.

The win evens the Red Flash record at 2-2 while this was an exhibition game for Seton Hill. The Red Flash are off for Thanksgiving and back in action on Monday, November 27th as they travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats. Tip time from the Queen City is set for 7 p.m.
