Strong Second Half Not Enough Against Dukes

PITTSBURGH, PA-  The Duquesne Dukes got off to a hot start on Thursday night and a strong second half from the Red Flash in an 87-68 setback in Pittsburgh inside the Palumbo Center.
 
Kyasia Duling (Zanesville, Ohio/New Albany (Duquesne)) racked up a team-best 15 rebounds in her return to Duquesne while Caitlyn Kroll (Bridgeport, Ohio/Bridgeport) who had 18 points and three rebounds. The Red Flash as a team swatted away nine shots led by Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum)'s three and Duling and Cydney Smith (Port Tobacco, Md./St. Mary's Ryken)'s two.
 
DULING'S REACTION
"This was a lot of fun tonight, no real nerves at all," Duling said on her return. "All the players out there, on both sides are my friends no matter the jersey, it was great to get out and compete with and against them."
 
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • The Dukes got out to a 13-0 lead as SFU started the game 0-9 from the field, prompting a timeout
  • A Kroll three off a nice Jessica Kovatch (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) pass got the offense going as they cut the lead to 18-8
  • Duquesne answered with a 10-2 run before a Kovatch lay-in ended the quarter with the Dukes leading 27-12
 
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • The Dukes again started quick, starting the quarter on a 18-5 run
  • Four-straight points from Ace Harrison (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor (Maryland)) got the offense going and a pair of Duling buckets followed
  • The Flash would trail 56-28 at the half
 
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • SFU jumped out quickly in the third, starting the quarter on a 9-2 run highlighted by a Kovatch three
  • A Courtney Zezza (Plum, Pa./Plum) and-one continued the SFU momentum as they cut into the Dukes' lead
  • A Kroll jumper beat the buzzer as SFU took the third quarter 24-15 to trail 71-52 heading into the fourth
 
FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash scored the first five points of the fourth as another Kovatch three cut the lead to 14
  • The Dukes answered back with six-straight critical points to get the lead back out to 20
  • Layups by Duling, Kroll and Leah Morrow (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) helped fuel the fourth quarter offense
  • A pair of Kroll free throws late closed out the scoring 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Dukes had five players in double figures led by Julijana Vojinovic's 21
  • Duquesne had a 61-43 edge on the glass but just a 13-9 edge on second-chance points
  • SFU had a slim 38-37 edge in the pain and 19-18 off turnovers, SFU forced 21 turnovers
  • Duquesne had a 24-16 on the break
LOOKING AHEAD
The Red Flash are back at home on Saturday as they welcome in the Tribe of William and Mary. Tip time from DeGol Arena is set for 2.
