MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday at The Club Sport and Health. The Red Flash won one singles and one doubles match. SFU is now 1-5 this spring, while Carnegie Mellon, ranked 12th in the ITA Division III Poll, is now 5-0.
"I was not pleased with our effort today," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "Credit to CMU, who played a very solid match. We need to learn to compete better. We're giving away too many free points and need to make things more difficult for our opponents. That's something we discussed after the match. Every player needs to fight for every point like it's the last point they'll ever play. If we learn to do that, we can be a tough team to beat."
At the top doubles spot, freshmen
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) met Carnegie Mellon's Cori Sidell and Nicholle Torres. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 victory. Gutierrez and Seigford are now 2-3 this spring.
Sophomores Raskha Bode and
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) competed at No. 2 against the Tartans' Courtney Ollis and Vinaya Rao. The SFU pair dropped a 6-4 result.
The Tartans won the match at No. 3 by default due to no SFU player available.

At the No. 2 position, Seigford met CMU's Sidell, ranked 28th in ITA Division III singles. Sidell won the first set, 6-2, but Seigford answered by winning a 6-2 set of her own. In the deciding set, Sidell came out on top, 6-4.
Bode competed against CMU's Vizelman at No. 3. The Red Flash sophomore fell 7-5, 7-5.
