MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Francis women's team opened NEC play on Sunday with a 6-1 victory against St. Francis Brooklyn at The Club Sport and Health. The Red Flash won two doubles matches and five singles matches. SFU improved to 2-5 this spring, while SFBK dropped to 0-7.
"Today was a good way to start off our conference schedules," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "The girls came out focused and professional and got the job done. We still need to bring more energy, intensity and a sense of urgency into doubles, so that is something we'll continue to work on this week. We'll rest up tomorrow and then get ready for next weekend."
Freshmen
Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and
Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) matched up at the top doubles spot against the Terriers' Sara Bogdanovic and Laura Dimante. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-3 win to improve to 3-3 this spring.
At No. 2, sophomores
Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and
Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) combined against Runsi Patro and Andrea Rojo. The SFU pair picked up a 6-3 victory for their third dual match win.
The Terriers won the match at No. 3 by default due to no SFU player available.
In the match at No. 1 singles, Gutierrez met SFBK's Bodganovic. The Red Flash rookie won her opening set, 6-1. She dominated the second set, winning 6-0, for the straight-set victory. That was Gutierrez' first singles win this spring.
Seigford took on St. Francis Brooklyn's Dimante at No. 2. Seigford set the tone with a 6-0 win in the first set. She completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in the second set. Seigford is now 3-4 this spring.
At No. 3, Miller competed against the Terriers' Patro. The SFU sophomore claimed the first set, 6-3. She earned a straight-set victory with a 6-0 second set. Miller is now 4-3 after winning both of her singles matches this weekend.
Bode met SFBK's Rojo at No. 4. The Red Flash sophomore dominated the first set, winning 6-0. She repeated that performance in the second set to also win 6-0. She is now 3-4 in dual matches.
Freshman
Kathryn Dunleavy (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) faced St. Francis Brooklyn's Akyi Lenjor at No. 5. Dunleavy also dominated her opening set, winning 6-0. She matched that in the second set to win 6-0. She is now 4-3 this spring.
The Terriers won the match at No. 6 by default due to no SFU player available.
The Red Flash meets Lafayette next Saturday at The Greensburg Racquet Club for a 5:30 p.m. match.
