Bowling 4-1, Defeat Defending National Champs at Day One of Music City Classic

SMYRNA, Tenn. - The Saint Francis bowling team went 4-1 and defeated Stephen F. Austin, the defending NCAA national champions, at day one of the Music City Classic at Smyrna Bowl in Smyrna, Tenn.

The Red Flash were led by sophomore Kyra Udziela (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) with a 21.14 baker frame average and Sophomore Haley Carroll (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) pitched in with an 18.26 baker frame average. Sophomore Sarah Littleton (Round Lake Beach, Ill./Grayslake North) rounded out the scoring for SFU with an. 18.00 baker frame average.

Vanderbilt: 983
The Red Flash were five pins away from going 5-0 on the day with a close loss to third-ranked Vanderbilt. A 213-170 advantage for SFU in game five was nearly enough to complete the comeback, but the Flash fell just short for their only loss of the day.

SFU: 857
Louisiana Tech: 853
After losing a close match to Vanderbilt, the Red Flash rebounded with a close four-pin win over Louisiana Tech in a low scoring match. The win put the Flash at 1-1 on the day with a match against defending NCAA champs Stephen F. Austin awaiting them.

SFU: 928
Stephen F. Austin: 904
The Flash pulled out a close 928-904 victory over defending NCAA National Champions Stephen F. Austin to improve to 2-1 on the day. A 225-181 advantage in game three aided SFU enough to hold off a 226-197 comeback from SFA in the final game of the match.

SFU: 908
Franklin Pierce: 863
SFU kept up their winning ways with a 908-863 win against Franklin Pierce to improve to 3-1 on the day. A 223 third game highlighted the set for SFU.

SFU: 893
Adelphi: 859
The Red Flash ended the day with a 893-859 win over Adelphi to end the day. After taking a 36-pin lead into game four, the Flash fell behind after Adelphi tossed a 199 to their 147 in game four. SFU bounced back the final game with a 206-156 advantage to capture the win.

The Flash currently sit in 16th place in the stacked 35-team field and will open tomorrow's opening position round with a re-match against 15th-place Adelphi.

"We responded very well in match play situations today and only five pins in the Vanderbilt match separated us from going 5-0," said head coach Tom Falbo. "However, our scoring pace needs to get better and that starts with our lane play. From what we learned today, we will be heading into tomorrow with more confidence and knowledge about how to play the lanes."
