Big second half gives SFU 5-0 win over Howard

BOX SCORE Washington D.C. - The goals continue to come in bunches for the Saint Francis men's soccer team (6-3) as the Red Flash scored five second-half goals to down Howard (1-9) 5-0 for its fourth consecutive win.

Moore's Reaction

"I am happy with the result tonight," said head coach Antony Moore. "It took us a while to get going, but once we did, we controlled the match and exerted our authority on it. It was good to have a couple of different goal scorers tonight and it should help with our confidence going into a tough game Saturday."
Turning Point

Howard held the Red Flash scoreless over the first 45 minutes. Freshman Leonardo Ribeiro (Florence, Italy/Liceo Linguistico "G Pascoli") broke through for Saint Francis with his first career goal in the 51st minute to give SFU a 1-0 lead. A Bison own goal five minutes later gave SFU a 2-0 lead and the Red Flash never looked back.

Highlights
  • Despite the lopsided score, it was Howard who nearly struck first, hitting the crossbar just seven minutes into the match.
  • Saint Francis stayed patient and was rewarded on Ribeiro's goal. He headed home a corner kick delivered by sophomore Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin).
  • The Bison own goal came amidst some confusion in front of goal and helped the Red Flash pad its lead to 2-0.
  • Junior Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township), who entered the game tied for second in the NCAA in goals, made sure to get in on the act with his ninth of the season in the 67th minute. Senior Jonathon Otting (Louisville, Ky/St. Xavier (Xavier (OH) University)) found Mastrangelo with a beautiful pass for his second assist of the season and second in as many matches.
  • Senior Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) scored his sixth career goal and his first of 2017 in the 73rd minute. He was set up by senior Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) who notched his fourth assist of the year.
  • Sophomore Jacob Gratzer rounded out the scoring with his first career goal in the 84th minute.
Notes
  • The Red Flash outshot the Bison 16-10 and 12-4 in shots on goal.
  • The Red Flash also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Saint Francis's four-game win streak matches its highest streak from 2016.
  • The Red Flash upped its goal total to 22 through just nine games. Saint Francis entered Wednesday's match with the 18th ranked scoring offense in the NCAA. After Wednesday's five-goal outburst, the Red Flash improved its goals per game to 2.44, which ranked sixth in the country at the start of the night. Only three NEC teams eclipsed SFU's current 22 goal total all of last season.
  • Seven players recorded points for the Red Flash.
  • Saint Francis recorded its third shutout in its last four games thanks to four saves from senior Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory). He ties Bobby Pipech for fifth all-time in the SFU record books.
  • Mastrangelo has scored six goals in his last four games.
  • Kiernan ties his career high with 10 points on the season.
  • Saint Francis has scored three or more goals in four of its nine games.
