Heartbreak on Grymes Hill

STATEN ISLAND, NY- D'Erren Wilson found tight end Chris Woodard on a 19-yard wide receiver throwback for a score with six seconds left, sending Saint Francis to a heartbreaking 23-22 loss to the Wagner Seahawks at Hameline Field on Saturday afternoon.

The touchdown answered a Kam Lewis 35-yard touchdown strike from Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) with two minutes remaining as Saint Francis erased a 16-7 fourth-quarter deficit to take their first and only lead of the game.

TURNING POINT
Wagner marched 65 yards on nine plays including a fourth-down conversion on the final drive. In addition to the touchdown, Woodard had a key grab over the middle to get the Seahawks inside the Saint Francis 30. The Red Flash tried a homerun throw back on the ensuing kick return but Nick Rinella (Collegeville, Pa./La Salle College) was up ended near midfield on the final play of the game.

BOX SCORE LEADERS
Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) fought the wind and a relentless Wagner pass rush to throw for 161 yards and two scores on 13-of-32 passing. Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin) rushed for 81 yards on 18 carries and an 11-yard score. Kam Lewis had 72 receiving yards and that 35-yard score, his 21st of his career, moving him sole possession of third-place on the SFU all-time list. Defensively, Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) led with a game-high 14 stops including 1.5 tackles for loss and a half sack. Hakeem Kinard (York, Pa./York Catholic) added 11 tackles while Louie Gartner (Bloomfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) had a forced fumble and six stops.

For Wagner, TJ Linta threw for 193 yards and two scores while Chris Woodard ended the day with 54 yards receiving and the infamous touchdown. On the ground, the nation's leading rusher, Ryan Fulse had 102 yards on 30 carries as SFU held the FCS lead to just 3.4 yards per carry and held the senior out of the end zone. Defensively, Cameron Gill, one of the top pass rushers in the FCS led the defense with nine tackles including a sack, two tackles-for-loss and a forced fumble

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • Wagner took the opening kickoff and converted a pair of third-downs on the drive including a 26-yard pitch-and-catch to Denzel Knight
  • The Seahawks got two strong rushes from FCS leading rusher Ryan Fulse to get Wagner inside the SFU 10
  • The Red Flash defense held as Trysten Hunt (Levittown, Pa./Truman) hit Fulse in the backfield to force a field goal
  • The ensuing kick from 22 yards was good as Wagner took a 3-0 lead
  • SFU would move the ball to midfield on their first drive but a forced fumble gave Wagner the ball at their own 37
  • The defenses would hold strong with each team only getting one first down the rest of the quarter
  • The Seahawks would lead 3-0 at the end of the first quarter

SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • Saint Francis' biggest play of the half came on a 26-yard crossing route from Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) to Kam Lewis
  • A pair of Chris Cropper (Wilmington, Del./St. Frances Academy) runs got the Red Flash inside the Wagner 30, their deepest drive of the half
  • Fenimore looked to hit Lewis again on a deep ball into the end zone but over threw the senior, forcing a field goal try
  • Eric Bofenkamp's (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy) 46-yard field goal begged wide left into the wind to keep it a 3-0 game
  • The teams continued to trade punts and jockey for field possession as neither team could move the ball
  • An SFU three-and-out plus a personal foul on the punt gave Wagner the ball at midfield
  • The Seahawks converted a pair of third downs on a 10-play drive, setting up TJ Linta's TD pass to D'Erren Wilson from eight yards out
  • Wagner would lead 10-0 at the half
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash opening drive stalled at midfield but Andrew Zecca (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Gov. Livingston) pinned Wagner inside their own 20
  • The SFU defense forced a three-and-out and the Red Flash took over in Wagner territory
  • Fenimore would hit Lewis and Terrell Johnson on third downs before Cam Gill hit Fenimore from behind, forcing a fumble that Wagner would recover at their own 14
  • The Red Flash defense again held strong and gave the offense good field position, a pair of tosses to Zach Campbell (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist), including one on fourth down kept the drive alive
  • After a trio of Jordan-Toney runs, Fenimore found Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) in the middle of the end zone on a slant for a score and got Saint Francis on the board, Eric Bofenkamp's (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy) extra point made it 10-7 Wagner
  • Wagner would answer back as Ryan Fulse rolled 51 yards on a screen pass on third down to give the Seahawks a goal-to-go scenario
  • Linta would find his tight end Ben Sieczkowski from 10-yards out to make it 16-7, Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) blocked the extra point to keep it a nine-point game
  • Nick Rinella (Collegeville, Pa./La Salle College) would return the ensuing kickoff to near midfield on the last play of the quarter, setting SFU up in good position but down 16-7 heading into the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • The SFU drive would stall but again Zecca pinned the Seahawks deep, getting his punt to check up and get downed at the three
  • On second down, Louie Gartner (Bloomfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) popped the ball loose from Ryan Fulse where Jaylen Parks (Dallas, Ga./North Paulding) recovered it at the Wagner 11
  • Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin) rolled in to the end zone on the next play and SFU cut the deficit to 16-14 after the extra point
  • Again the SFU defense forced a three-and-out but Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) would be stopped on a fourth-and-inches from the Wagner 40 on the following drive, keeping it a 16-14 game
  • Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Calvin Beaty (Holmdel, N.J./St. John-Vianney) would come up with a big sack of TJ Linta on third down, Nick Rinella (Collegeville, Pa./La Salle College) would return the ensuing punt 40 yards to the Wagner 45, setting SFU up with a chance to take their first lead
  • Backup linebacker Omar Mareko (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei) would get the call on another fourth-and-short and he delivered the one needed yard on his third effort to keep the SFU drive alive
  • Fenimore would find Kam Lewis on a fade ball into the right corner of the end zone on second-and-10 for a 35 yard score, the grad student would hit Terrell Johnson on a two-point conversion to give SFU a 22-16 lead
  • Wagner's two-minute drill got off to a slow start as a penalty gave the Seahawks their first fresh set of downs
  • The Red Flash looked to have Wagner stopped on a 4th-and-10 but a pass interference call on Da'Jon Lee (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) moved the ball to mid-field
  • Chris Woodard caught a pass over the middle for 24 yards and a 10-yard out to Fulse moved the ball inside the SFU 20
  • Fulse's catch held up through review, giving Wagner enough time to draw up the double reverse from Wilson to Woodard for the game winning score

Wagner improves to 2-5 on the season and 1-1 in the Northeast Conference. Saint Francis now sits at 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the NEC. The Red Flash will look to rebound at home against Duquesne next Saturday on homecoming. Kickoff from DeGol Field is set for noon.
