Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Bobby Dragon

SFU ends the night with 0-0 draw

Teaneck, N.J.- Another stellar defensive performance helped the Saint Francis men's soccer team (6-3-3, 2-0-2 NEC) close out the night with a 0-0 draw against Fairleigh Dickinson (4-5-4, 1-1-2 NEC) on Friday night in Teaneck, N.J.

Olszewski Reaction
"As a coaching staff, we are proud of the team, said head coach Frank Olszewski.  "The effort and commitment was there all night. We had chances to win the game and wanted all three points. At the end of the day, FDU was pushing hard as well, and with no one scoring a goal, we will take a point, move on, work hard, and bring positive energy in our preparation next week."

Turning Point
Fairleigh Dickinson had a few opportunities to put some points on the boards in the second period but freshman goalie Alex Morgret's (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) two saves helped contain the Knights' offensive attack.

Highlights
  • Three minutes into the game, junior Jacob Gratzer (Olmsted Falls, OH/St. Edward's) slipped a nice pass between two Knight defenders to the foot of senior Nicco Mastrangleo but his shot was deflected by FDU goalie Jahmail Waite.
  • In the 17th minute, Mastrangelo dodged a couple defenders to find sophomore Leonardo Riberio at the top of box, Riberio takes a couple steps before firing a shot that curved just left of the goal.
  • First period winding down, Mastrangelo laced a ball across the box that deflected off sophomore Filip Burnett (Germantown, Md./Poolesville) as a charging Gabriel Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lausanne Collegiate School) tried to make a play but the ball sailed over the post.
  • In the 65th minute, Morgret came up with a big time diving save as he misplayed a kick that led to a one on one battle with FDU Valentino Ambrosio.
  • Two minutes remaining in the first overtime, sophomore Kevin Smolyn (Holland, Pa./Germantown Academy) tried to sneak a low shot from the top of the box that fizzled just left of the post.

Inside of the box
  • Saint Francis outshot the Knights, 20-10.
  • Shots on goal were 3-2 favor of Saint Francis.
  • The Red Flash edged the Knights in corner kicks 8-4.

Notes
  • Smolyn led the Red Flash with six shots.
  • Morgret made two saves.
  • The draw makes it the third tie of the season.
  • Senior Lucas Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) contributed with five shots off the bench.
