Day Two: Red Flash Finish Fourth in Final Day of KU Bud Witman Memorial

Reading, Pa.- The Saint Francis women's bowling team (8-2) finished off the first weekend in fourth place at the KU Bud Witman Memorial.

Gonner's Reaction

"The goal for the day was to improve upon the previous day, and we were successful with that," said head coach Andrew Gonner.  "The energy, focus, and communication today was better. The ladies were mentally tough today as we competed in some tough matches. The way the patterns worked, we had to make a high quality shots every single frame. On a day like today, it is nice to have senior leadership, but we also had underclassmen step up when they were called upon. Our 8-2 record is tied for second among the teams who competed this weekend, and that's a testament to 3 weeks of hard work."

An exciting match, and one that tested our mental toughness. Every pin, game, and bowler played a vital role in this team win.
Senior Haley Carroll (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) clutched three strikes in the tenth frame to shut out Chestnut, and Littleton striked four of her last five frames to solidify the win. Senior Amanda Balas (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford) came into the rotation and added an important 187 game.

A comeback of sorts. Great communication throughout this match allowed for the opportunity to have a chance in the last three frames, and the ladies capitalized on that opportunity. Sophomore Britney Grey (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus Little Valley Central) and Carroll both bowled three strikes in the 10th frame, and Battles went the final six frames of her 181 clean to get the win.

Match 5: Saint Francis University-Brooklyn. Lost 856-897
Amanda Balas (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford): 200
Kristen Battles (Aliquippa, PA./Central Valley): 147
Britney Grey (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus Little Valley Central): 168
Haley Carroll (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South): 177
Sarah Littleton (Round Lake Beach, Ill./Grayslake North): 164

It was definitely the most frustrating match of the day. This match was the highest pocket percentage of the five matches. We faced a tough St. Francis-Brooklyn team that made some great shots. Meanwhile, we got penalized with some pocket shots, leaving multiple splits. Therefore, we went into the ninth and tenth frame with a chance to win, but came up a little short.

Haley Carroll (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) made the All Tournament Team with a 5 game total of 977, good enough for 3rd place.

"Haley seemed to make key shots at the right time all day. It was nice to see her individually rewarded with an All-Tournament team selection."

The next tournament for the Red Flash is the Mount St. Mary's Invite on Oct 20-21, hosted by first year program Mount St. Mary's.
