Lucas Canineu’s late goal flies SFU to victory

Loretto, Pa.- With just seconds remaining in the second period, junior Lucas Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) helped lift the Saint Francis men's soccer team (8-3-3, 4-0-2) to a 1-0 victory over first place LIU Brooklyn (10-4-1, 5-1-0) on Sunday afternoon.

Olszewski Reaction
"You don't see these types of wins everyday especially against an opponent like LIU Brooklyn," said head coach Frank Olszewski. "With two games remaining, we must keep our focus and control what lies ahead for us."

Turning Point
Lucas Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) converted from 25 yards outside the box with two second remaining in regulation to put Saint Francis up 1-0.

Highlights
  • Sophomore Leonardo Riberio nearly sprung sophomore Gabriel Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lausanne Collegiate School) in on a goal five minutes into the game but the sophomore didn't get enough speed to push it by LIU goalie Sam Ilin.
  • The Blackbirds tried forcing the game's first point in the 38th minute as senior Eric Ganime (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Icaro) chased down forward Romario Guscott to clear the threat.
  •  In the 62nd minute, LIU Nick Hanson tried forcing a shot in-between a narrow pocket but freshman Alex Morgret (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) predicted the shot angle and came through with a diving save.
  • SFU generated another opportunity in the 67th minutes as Riberio fired a cross to the head of Castro whose header deflected off LIU. Senior Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) tries to capitalize but his shot was saved.
  • With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Morgret created another diving stop as LIU Marius Koss broke through a couple defenders and tried to sneak it through the left side of the goal.
