BOX SCORE BROOKLYN NY- Four players posted double-doubles but it wouldn't be enough as big runs in each of the last three sets propelled the Saint Francis Brooklyn Terriers to a five-set win on Saturday night.
Brooklyn prevailed 26-28, 19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-10 to drop the Red Flash to 3-8 in conference play.
BOX SCORE LEADERS
Alexis Lambert (McKinney, Tx./McKinney-Boyd) led the four players with double doubles with 17 kills to go with 12 digs.
Madi Tyus (Plano, TX/Bishop Lynch) added 15 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Defensively, the Red Flash posted a season-high 14 blocks led by
Sophia Esposito (Coraopolis, PA/Montour (Gardner-Webb)) who had seven total. For Brooklyn, Lauren Montgomery had a huge game with 25 kills to lead all players.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET RECAP
- A trio of Terrier kills had the Red Flash down 4-0 early
- Kills from Nicole Adams (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa East) and Alexis Lambert (McKinney, Tx./McKinney-Boyd) got the Red Flash within two on two separate occasions, but couldn't get closer in the early going
- Another Adams' kill got the Red Flash even at seven
- Madi Tyus (Plano, TX/Bishop Lynch) added a kill and a pair of Terrier errors gave SFU a 11-8 lead and forced a timeout
- The SFU balanced attack continued as Adams and Tyus added kills to extend the lead out to 17-11
- The Terriers would chip away at the lead, forcing a SFU timeout after two-straight kills made it 20-17
- Saint Francis sat on four set points after trading points with the Terriers only to see SFBK rally with five straight points to lead 25-24
- SFBK had set points at 25-24 and 26-25 but the Red Flash rallied back again with an ace and kill from Adams and a block to close the first set at 28-26
SECOND SET RECAP
- The teams traded the lead on a pair of occasions, splitting the first 12 points of the set
- A pair of combo blocks with Sophia Esposito (Coraopolis, PA/Montour (Gardner-Webb)) broke the tie and gave SFU the first two-point lead of the set
- Daysha Shamlin (Bear, Del./Tower Hill) spiked an overpass to force a SFBK timeout and give SFU a 13-9 lead
- There would be no letup this time from the Flash, as SFBK only would get within one the rest of the way
- An ace from Alexis Lambert (McKinney, Tx./McKinney-Boyd) quieted a Terrier run, her second of the set, and gave SFU a 20-17 lead
- The lead would extend to as many as six before a Terrier service error cemented the set for the Red Flash at 25-19
THIRD SET RECAP
- The start of the third mirrored the second set with the teams splitting the first 10 points
- SFU grabbed an 8-5 lead after taking advantage of three SFBK errors
- Brooklyn rallied back to tie the match at 10 and their run continued out to a 16-10 advantage, forcing a SFU timeout
- A pair of Lambert kills capped a Red Flash run that brought the deficit to two and prompted a Terrier timeout
- The Terriers responded with five-straight points to put the third set out of reach as SFBK forced a fourth set with a 25-19 victory
FOURTH SET RECAP
- Lambert again got a pair of kills as SFU grabbed a 4-2 lead, only to see the Terriers rally back
- Brooklyn forced a SFU timeout after winning five of six points to take a three-point lead
- The Terrier lead held until a Tyus ace was coupled with an Adams kill to tie the set at 12
- The teams exchanged runs until 18 all where two-straight points from the Terriers forced an SFU timeout
- The timeout couldn't stop the SFBK momentum as they built a five-point lead at 23-18
- SFU couldn't mount a run of their own as Brooklyn forced a fifth set with another 25-19 win
FIFTH SET RECAP
- SFBK took the early lead off a pair of kills
- Adams put an end to a long rally with a spike to start a 3-0 run for the Red Flash to take the lead
- A tip-shot from Sophia Esposito (Coraopolis, PA/Montour (Gardner-Webb)) found the ground as SFU took their first two-score lead of the set at 5-3, forcing a SFBK timeout
- The lead would grow to 8-4 at the changeover but a trio of SFU errors cut the lead down to one, causing SFU to use its first timeout
- SFBK re-took the lead out of the timeout off a kill and a service ace, ultimately going on a 8-0 run
- Lambert and Tyus finally ended the run with kills but SFBK enjoyed a 13-10 lead
- The Terriers' momentum couldn't be stopped as they closed out the match, 15-10
LOOKING AHEAD
The Red Flash close out the road portion of the schedule next Friday night as they travel to Moon Township for a Keystone clash with Robert Morris. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from the North Athletic Complex.
