Loretto, Pa. - The Saint Francis women's soccer team (5-6-3, 3-0-1 NEC) recorded another one-goal conference victory on Sunday thanks to a 53rd minute strike from senior
Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), downing Mount St. Mary's (2-7-3, 1-1-2 NEC), 1-0. All three of SFU's conference wins have been by one goal.
Van Stralen's Reaction
"You are always happy with three points," said head coach Brenda Van Stralen. "I thought we could have finished off the game earlier if we converted some of our scoring chances but it's always critical to protect your home field during the conference season and we were able to do that today."
Turning Point
Both teams were stuck in neutral in the first half as the teams combined for just seven total shots over the first 45 minutes. SFU came out the aggressor in the second half and was rewarded with Suler's third goal of the season. Sophomore
Mariana Jaleca (Sebtubal, Portugal/) started the play with a diagonal pass to freshman
Leanna Choo (Germantown, Md./Northwest). She squared the ball across the top of the Mount St. Mary's box for Suler who directed it home for the game's only goal.
Highlights
- Freshman Corinne Renninger (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) had an active first half for SFU with two shots. Her first shot tested the keeper from 25 yards out and forced a diving save.
- Junior Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) curled in a cross to the far post in the 32nd minute intended for junior Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin). The cross connected but Tarosky's shot was saved.
- SFU picked up its intensity from the opening whistle of the second half. Possession from the kickoff led to McGhee crossing the ball at the back post to Choo at the back post. She met the cross but sailed the volley high.
