FAIRFIELD, CT- The Red Flash will wrap up the 2018 regular season and 19 seniors will play in their final game for Saint Francis as SFU takes on Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon with a noon kickoff scheduled from Campus Field.
Â
Saint Francis will look to even their NEC record at 3-3 and spoil Sacred Heart's chances of a share of the Northeast Conference's regular season title. The Pioneers sit at 4-1 in the conference and would clinch a share of the title with a victory and would earn the conference's auto bid with a win and if CCSU also defeats Duquesne on Saturday.
Â
THIS BEAR IS BEST
Saint Francis quarterback
Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) enters the season finale with 21 touchdown passes and 2,038 yards passing. Fenimore leads the NEC in touchdown tosses and is neck-and-neck with Price Wilson from Bryant for the passing yard lead. The Texan has a chance to set the SFU single-season record for touchdown passes currently held by
Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) who tossed 22 in 2016. The grad transfer ran his streak of games with at least two touchdown passes to nine with a pair in the loss to Central Connecticut last week.
Â
LEWIS IS CHASING HISTORY
Senior wideout Kam Lewis has an outside chance to set the career receiving mark on Saturday, needing 164 yards to pass Michael Caputo (2003-06) as the all-time leader in receiving yards. With his 113-yard effort against CCSU, Lewis moved to third on the NEC's all-time receiving yards list. He'll have to do it against a Sacred Heart team that has allowed just 143 yards passing per game in NEC play this season.
Â
SHUT 'EM DOWN
The Saint Francis defense is among the best in the country at making the big play. The Red Flash sit eighth in the FCS in tackles for loss, averaging nearly nine per game. Leading the charge is
Da'Jon Lee (Fairfax, Va./Robinson), he leads the team with eight sacks on the season but is eighth in the FCS with nearly two tackles for loss per game.
Â
The end result is a defense that is 11
th in the FCS in total defense, allowing just 297 yards per game. It has been particularly stout against the run, allowing just 116 yards per game on the ground, tops in the Northeast Conference. It'll be tested against a Sacred Heart rushing attack that is 12
th in the country and tops in the NEC, averaging close to 250 yards per game on the ground.
Â
ABOUT THE PIONEERS
As mentioned above, the Pioneers have everything to play for. In addition to their senior day, they can clinch at least a share of NEC crown with a win on Saturday.
Â
They'll try to do most of their offensive damage on the ground with the dual rushing attack of Jordan Meachum and Julius Chestnut. Meachum ranks second in the NEC with over 1200 yards rushing and 11
th in the FCS with 150 yards of total offense per game. Chestnut on the other hand, has nearly 700 yards rushing and seven TDs, both backs are averaging over 6.5 yards per carry.
Â
Through the air, Kevin Duke has been the main signal caller all season. He's been a great compliment to the rushing attack, averaging over 185 yards per game through the air. On the season, he's tossed 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions and averaging about 10 completions per game in the NEC.
Â
Defensively, it's been a team effort with three players leading the way at 52 tackles on the season. The Pioneers have been incredibly difficult to pass against, allowing just under 150 yards per game through the air. That's been in part due to their ability to get to the passer, Chris Agyemang and Aaron Donalson have seven and four sacks on the season, respectfully. In the secondary, Noah Provenzano and Brendon Slade have filled the stat sheet. Provenzano leads the team with a pair of picks on the season while Slade leads the team in passes defended.
