FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry)'s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth drove in the go-ahead run as the Saint Francis Softball team earned a 3-2 win over Iowa State on Sunday. The Red Flash improved to 16-15 on the season and Iowa State dropped to 17-15. SFU went 2-3 on the weekend at the Wooo Pig Classic, hosted by Arkansas.
The Red Flash earned its 10th win over a Power Five conference program since 2015. Saint Francis is 3-2 against Big 12 teams in the last two seasons.
Sophomore
Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) picked up her 12th win of the season with a complete-game performance. She allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking none. Trahan gave up only one hit after the first inning and retired 19 of the final 21 batters she faced, with two streaks of nine straight retired.
Emma Hylen started for the Cyclones. The junior went six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out seven.
The Red Flash tallied three runs on seven hits. Junior
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) went two-for-three with an RBI double. Junior
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) also had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs.
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) contributed an RBI double and
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) had a single and a run.
Iowa State collected two runs on five hits. Stacy Woolpert drove in both runs with a home run in the first inning. Sami Williams, Kaylee Bosworth, Taylor Nearad and Skyler Ramos each had base hits.
The Cyclones put two runs on the board in the top of the first. Following a single to center by Sami Williams, ISU's Woolpert hit a fly ball over the wall in left for a two-run shot.
Saint Francis cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third. With one out,
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Norton crushed a line drive to the wall in left-center to score McKee from first. The Red Flash trailed 2-1 after three innings.
The Red Flash tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) led off the inning with a double to right-center. Two batters later, a grounder by Bower up the left field line deflected off the glove of the diving third baseman and into left field. McKee came around to touch the plate and even the game at 2-2.
Saint Francis took the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) beat out a grounder to third to begin the inning. A sacrifice bunt by
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) moved McKee to second and a groundout by Bower moved her to third. Troxell lined a 1-2 pitch into left field to drive in McKee for the go-ahead run.
The Red Flash visits Pitt on Wednesday for a midweek contest. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Vartabedian Field. The Panthers have a 14-11-1 record this season.
