Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Saint Francis steamrolls, UMBC, 4-0

Loretto, Pa. - It was a career day for numerous players in a Saint Francis uniform on Thursday as the Red Flash (1-1-1) defeated UMBC 4-0 at the Stokes SoccerPlex for their first win of the season.

Van Stralen's Reaction

"It was fun to watch the team play today. We played an attractive style of soccer, moved the ball around the pitch and fully deserved the result. We need to build off this performance and put in another solid 90 minutes on Sunday."

Turning Point

As she has done numerous times over her career, junior forward Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) got things rolling with her second goal of the season in the 35th minute to put Saint Francis ahead 1-0. Junior Sarah Ward (Connellsville, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) started the play with an interception and found senior Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory). The midfielder sprayed the ball wide to McGhee who cut onto her right foot and curled a gorgeous shot into the top corner. It was Ward's first career point.

Highlights
  • Saint Francis appeared to have found an early goal when Suler headed home a rebound from a McGhee shot that struck the underside of the crossbar, but the linesman ruled she was in an offside position when the shot was struck and waved off the goal.
  • Sophomore Mariana Jaleca (Sebtubal, Portugal/) created a chance 10 minutes later with a deft touch over a defender but her well-hit left-footed shot was directly at the keeper.
  • McGhee's goal sent SFU to halftime leading 1-0.
  • Redshirt junior Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School) made her best save of the evening early in the second half to preserve a 1-0 lead, springing to her left for a fingertip save.
  • Jaleca broke the game open in the 58th minute, receiving a layoff pass from Leanna Choo (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and curling it top bin over the outstretched UMBC keeper.
  • Sophomore Teresa Reid (Northeast, Md./Rising Sun) got into the scoring act in the 69th minute with her first career goal, hitting a failed UMBC clearing attempt first-time into the side netting.
  • Freshman Alex Martinez (Baltimore, Md./Maryvale Prep) rounded out the scoring with a goal on her collegiate debut. Junior Abigail Tarosky (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) sent a long ball to the back post to freshman Alyssa Deschler (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) who squared the ball across the box for Martinez to tap in.
Notes
  • Four players recorded their first career points as Martinez and Reid claimed goals and Choo and Ward collected assists.
  • SFU played a season-high 22 players. Martinez, Deschler and fellow freshmen Jordan Markiewicz (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) and Rhialle Jessell (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) came on for their first taste of college soccer while juniors Shelby Milton (Wollongon, NSW Australia/Westfields Sports) and Natalie Spangler (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) saw their first game action of the season.
  • The Red Flash outshot UMBC 22-13 for the match while shots on goal were 11-6.
  • Jaleca led SFU with four shots followed by Choo, McGhee and Reid with three each.
  • Hernan made six saves for her 17th career shutout, which moves her two shy of tying the program record.
  • Saint Francis has scored at least two goals in all three of its matches, running its season total to eight. Six different players have scored goals and 12 players have already record at least one point.
