Mario Mastrangelo's (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) first half goal helped the Saint Francis men's soccer team punch a 1-0 victory in its season opener at Sorrels Field in Houston, Texas on Friday night.
Olszewski Reaction
"It was a good team win," said first year head coach
Frank Olszewski. "We had to work hard for 90 minutes. The effort was there throughout the game. There were many positives and a lot to learn from. Now we turn our attention to preparation for Sunday."
Highlights
- Both teams kept things close in the first period. Sophomore Leonardo Ribeiro (Florence, Italy/Liceo Linguistico "G Pascoli") had a pair of shots on goal to keep the Vaqueros on their toes.
- In the 25th minute, sophomore Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) connected with Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) to set up his his first goal of the 2018 season.
- UTRGV would have a couple opportunities to score before the half but the Red Flash defense did not budge.
- Freshman Alex Morgret (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) recorded three saves in his first collegiate start at goalie.
Notes
- The Red Flash outshot UTRGV 11-10 for the match.
- Mastrangelo and Ribeiro led the Flash with four shots while Gabriel Castro (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lausanne Collegiate School) followed with two.
- Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) and Nicco Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) logged 90 minutes for the Red Flash.
- Freshman Ryan Berhorst (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) saw some action in his SFU debut, recording 20 minutes.
