Saint Francis blanks La Salle in conference opener

Loretto, Pa – The Saint Francis Red Flash field hockey team defeated the Explorers of La Salle University 4-0 on Friday at DeGol Field. The win improves the Red Flash to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Turning Point

Early in the second half, freshman Agustina Deharbe (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorlands) tipped in her second goal of the season. Deharbe's goal came off an assist by Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial). The Red Flash went on to score three more goals in the second half to put the Explorers away for good.

Highlights:

  • Saint Francis struck first as Celeste Azzari (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional) put her stick on a Brianna Govia (St. James, Trinidad/Holy Name) shot to give Saint Francis an early lead at the 20:17 mark in the first half. The Red Flash took the 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a big-time save made by Elizabeth Dyer (Berwick, Pa./Berwick).

  • After the half, Brea Seabrook (Wilkes Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) unleashed a backhand shot at La Salle goalkeeper Emma Provost. The ball deflected off of Provost and freshman Agustina Deharbe (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorlands) was there to put in the rebound, extending the Red Flash lead to two goals.

  • Abby Romig (Honey Brook, Pa./Twin Valley) commanded heavy attention in front of the net during the second half. At the 61:14 mark, Govia weaved her way through the Explorers defense to get a shot on goal. Govia then rebounded her own shot and found sophomore Abby Romig (Honey Brook, Pa./Twin Valley) on the other side of the cage to seize a 3-0 lead for the Red Flash.

  • Samantha Olton (Diego Martin, Trinidad/Providence Girls Catholic) ripped a shot on net, creating a rebound opportunity for Romig. The sophomore took advantage as she scooped the shot off of the turf and into the back of the net.

Notes:

  • Dyer notched the seventh shutout of her Red Flash career.

  • The Red Flash outshot the Explorers 11 to 8.

  • La Salle earned an eight-to-three penalty corner advantage over Saint Francis.

  • Samantha Olton (Diego Martin, Trinidad/Providence Girls Catholic) picked up her second green card of the season at the 12:26 mark.
