Loretto, Pa. - Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School) made four saves, including a key stop in the first overtime period, to record her 19th career shutout which ties the school record as the Saint Francis women's soccer team (2-2-2) tied Bucknell (2-3-1) on Sunday.
Van Stralen's Reaction
"I loved the effort and compete-level of our team," said head coach
Brenda van Stralen. "I thought our performance dropped a little bit in the second half but we still battled and held a physical team scoreless over 110 minutes so I am proud of each and every player today."
Turning Point
Saint Francis created the better of the chances early in the match before Bucknell grabbed the momentum in the second half. The Red Flash had to hold its breath early in the first overtime period when Gabby Bair waltzed in one-on-one with Hernan but Hernan won the battle with a fantastic save.
Highlights
- Saint Francis had the first scoring opportunity of the evening midway through the first half. Senior Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) spun and delivered a cross to the top of the six yard box. Junior Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) came roaring in from the left wing to get inside her defender and get a poke on the cross but it narrowly missed the target.
- Bucknell's Bailey Hurst had the next scoring chance but chipped the hard-charging Hernan wide of goal.
- Saint Francis survived a turnover deep in its territory in hte 55th minute and was bailed out by a diving stop from Hernan.
- Hurst had another good chance in the 70th minute after turning on an SFU defender but her shot from 12 yards out sailed just high.
- Freshman Corrine Renninger nearly won the match in the 86th minute when she headed a throw-in from sophomore Mariana Jaleca (Sebtubal, Portugal/) into her own path and sprinted by the defender. Her shot tested the Bucknell goalie but was kept out by a top-notch save.
- Sophomore Emilee Barnett (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) nearly sprung McGhee to goal with a through pass at the start of the second overtime but her pass had too much weight and was collected by the Bucknell goalie as the game ended in a stalemate.
