Red Flash Come Up Just Short at Albany

ALBANY, NY- Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns but a Dev Holmes 24-yard touchdown pass with just under eight minutes to go proved to be the difference in a 35-28 loss at Albany on Saturday night at Casey Stadium.
 
TURNING POINT
The Red Flash had two possessions to tie the game but Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) was sacked on 4th-and-9 with 90 seconds left to seal the Red Flash fate.
 
LEADERS
Fenimore fell just shy of his career high of 293 yards (vs Wagner) and his three touchdowns tied a career high. Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin) ran for a tough 70 yards on 29 carries and scored the first Red Flash touchdown. Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) had a career high 132 yards and a touchdown, a 57-yard strike up the far sideline in the third quarter. Defensively, Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) tied for the team high with eight stops while adding a big tackle for loss and an interception.
 
For Albany, Vincent Testaverde threw for 331 yards and matched Fenimore with three touchdowns against a pair of interceptions. On the ground, Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks and Karl Mofor each had 92 yards with Ibitokun-Hanks scoring the lone touchdown on the ground. Dev Holmes showed why he is one of the leading receivers in the FCS, grabbing seven passes for 128 yards and two scores, including the game winner. Tyler Carswell led the Great Danes with a game-high eight stops.

Albany became the first team this year to top 300 yards against the Red Flash, going for 503 on Saturday night against 360 for the Red Flash. The Danes had a 200-96 rushing yard lead and 331-286 through the air. The Red Flash won the turnover battle 2-1 and each team was penalized 35 yards. SFU controlled the ball, holding it for 33:42 compared to 26:18 for the Great Danes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
FIRST QUARTER RECAP
  • Saint Francis forced a three-and-out on Albany's opening possession but their ensuing drive stalled inside the Danes' 40
  • Vincent Testaverde hooked up with Dev Holmes on a pair of first downs on Albany's second drive to move into SFU territory
  • The Red Flash thought they had a stop on a fourth-and-short but was ruled offside…Albany's Elijah Ibitokun-Harris took the next play 36 yards on the ground for the game's first score
  • SFU would answer back with Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) hitting Kamron Lewis (Fresno, Calif./Edison) on a big third down and Joel Denley (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook) for a 26-yard gain
  • Denley would get SFU into a goal-to-go scenario with a 16-yard run and Jymere Jordan-Toney (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin) pounded it in from four yards out to tie the score
  • Dev Holmes would get loose again on the last play of the first quarter, setting Albany up at the SFU 14 after a 54-yard catch and run
 
SECOND QUARTER RECAP
  • Holmes would finish what he started on the second play of the quarter, catching an 11-yard slant to put Albany back up 14-7
  • Fenimore would again strike back, hitting Lewis on a crossing route for 17 yards, then Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) on a 39-yard pass down the sideline to set SFU up inside the Albany 10
  • On third down, Denley was left wide open over the middle and walked in from eight yards out as SFU tied the score at 14
  • The teams would trade punts on their next two drives before Albany would drive inside the SFU as Donovan McDonald made a pair of 20-plus yard receptions
  • The SFU defense would hold strong in the red zone, holding the Great Danes to a 31-yard field goal to lead 17-14
  • Fenimore got sacked on third down on the final drive of the half for the Red Flash, forcing them to punt it away
  • Karl Mofor took the first play of Albany's final drive 74 yards inside the SFU 10
  • Trysten Hunt (Levittown, Pa./Truman) had the biggest defensive play of the half, sacking Vincent Testaverde and holding the Danes to a chip-shot field goal
  • Albany took a 20-14 lead into the halftime locker room
 
THIRD QUARTER RECAP
  • The Red Flash took the opening drive of the half and a Bear Fenimore (Austin, Texas/Westwood) sneak on third-and-short kept it alive
  • A quick slant to Joel Denley (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook) got the Red Flash to midfield, after a holding penalty, Fenimore found Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) for 57 yards off a busted coverage as SFU took its first lead of the game at 21-20
  • Hakeem Kinard (York, Pa./York Catholic) picked off Vincent Testaverde but the Red Flash drive off the pick would stall
  • Jerah Reeves would beat Jarren Williams (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) to the ball after the corner tried to jump the route and took a Testaverde pass 65 yards for a score, the two-point conversion succeeded as Albany retook the lead at 28-21
  • Kam Lewis out jumped double coverage on third down to bring in a 34-yard pass from Fenimore and set up a goal-to-go
  • On fourth-and-goal from inside the one, Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) drew a pass interference penalty, setting SFU up again with 1st-and-goal
  • Terell Johnson (Burlington, N.C./Cummings) hooked up with Fenimore in the back corner for a one-yard score, knotting the game at 28
 
FOURTH QUARTER RECAP
  • Testaverde was hit and had his pass deflected and eventually picked off by Ben Bruni (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) who returned it to the Albany 37
  • The Red Flash drive stalled at the 30 of the Danes and the 47-yard field goal fell short, keeping the game tied
  • The Danes went on the move after the missed field goal, converting a pair of third downs and marched 70 yards on 10 plays with Testaverde finding Dev Holmes for a 24-yard TD pass as Albany retook the lead, 35-28
  • The teams traded punts with the Red Flash holding on defense and getting the ball back at their own 15 with 2:26 left
  • Fenimore found Cyrus Holder (Uniondale, N.Y./Milford Academy) for a first down, giving him a new career high of 132 yards
  • Following a false start, Fenimore was sacked on fourth down, giving the ball back to the Great Danes at the SFU 21 with 90 seconds left
  • The Great Danes were able to gain a first down and run out the clock to seal the win
 
The win keeps Albany unbeaten in 16 games against the Red Flash and this was the first one-score game in the rivalry and moves the Great Danes to 2-2 on the year while the Red Flash fall to 1-3. Saint Francis is back in action next weekend against West Virginia Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. next Saturday from DeGol Field
