Fairfield, CT- Four Red Flash goals helped the Saint Francis men's soccer team (5-3-1, 1-0) complete a 4-2 victory over conference opponent Sacred Heart (1-7-1, 0-1) on Friday afternoon in both teams' conference openers.

"Like all NEC games, it was a battle," said head coach
Frank Olszewski. "The team had to stick together and respond on a couple of occasions. You will always be challenged in this conference. Character comes out in those difficult moments. You need the skill to be successful, but you must also have the will to win and we had that today."

- Senior Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) opened the scoring in the 26th minute with his fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Leonardo Ribeiro (Florence, Italy/Liceo Linguistico "G Pascoli") was credited with the assist. Â
- The Pioneers answered back in the 38th minute on a goal from Oscar Curras.
- Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) opened the second half with another goal, which puts him at six for the season. Sophomore Christian Kirchhoff (Aarhaus, Denmark) was recorded with the assist.
- Senior Tulio Canineu (Corbin, Ky/Corbin) extended the Red Flash lead in the 77th minute with Kirchhoff and Mastrangelo contributing to the seniors first goal of the season.
- Sacred Heart cut the Red Flash lead to one on an Alejandro Arribas' goal.
- With eight minutes remaining in the contest, sophomore Kevin Smolyn (Holland, Pa./Germantown Academy) recorded his second goal of the season on an unassisted goal.
