Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jaleca's late goal leads to 1-1 draw

Loretto, Pa. - Sophomore Mariana Jaleca (Sebtubal, Portugal/) scored a game-tying free kick in the 88th minute to help the Saint Francis women's soccer team (4-6-3, 2-0-1 NEC) complete a four-point weekend with a 1-1 draw at Bryant (6-4-1, 2-0-1 NEC) on Sunday.

Van Stralen's Reaction

"We will take the four points from this road trip," said head coach Brenda Van Stralen. "We gave up a soft goal early but kept at it and got back in the game late. I am happy with the effort and we will work to correct some of our miscues going forward."

Turning Point

Saint Francis played from behind virtually the entire match after Bryant took the lead in the third minute and was finally able to break through in the 88th minute. Jaleca stepped over a free kick from 30 yards out and sent it up and over the wall into the bottom right corner to send the game into overtime.

Highlights
  • Rachel Benz was the Bryant goalscorer, working a 1-2 in the SFU box and hitting a shot that deflected up and over SFU goalkeeper Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School).
  • SFU nearly fell behind by two goals when the Bulldogs got through on a breakaway in the second half but Hernan recorded a huge save by tipping it off the post before a defender cleared to safety.
  • Hernan's goal was her third of the year and her second from a dead ball.
  • Bryant appeared to win the game in the first overtime when a cross was redirected into the SFU goal but it was correctly brought back for offsides.
