Terriers tackle Red Flash in three sets

BOX SCORE Brooklyn, N.Y. - The Saint Francis women's volleyball team (2-17, 2-5 NEC) couldn't string together a two-game win streak to try to inch back into the NEC Playoff picture, losing to St. Francis Brooklyn (9-12, 3-4 NEC) in three sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-21).

It was a rough start for the Red Flash as the Terriers took 15 of the match's first 20 points. SFU tried to crawl back into the set and made the score 20-15 after a kill from sophomore Madi Tyus (Plano, TX/Bishop Lynch) but St. Francis Brooklyn took the next three points en route to the set win.

Set two was a similar story as the Red Flash fell behind 15-7. Freshman Jeanie Edgington's (Olmstead Falls, Oh/Olmstead Falls) kill cut the deficit to 24-16 before the Terriers closed it out for a 2-0 lead.

The third set was more of a seesaw battle. Trailing 6-2, Saint Francis capitalized on three straight Terrier miscues. The SFU deficit stretched back to 10-6 before a Tyus ace and kill from sophomore Nicole Adams (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa East) kept SFU within striking distance. St. Francis Brooklyn opened up a 23-16 lead and the match appeared all but over before SFU came roaring back behind the right arm of Adams. Four straight Adams' kills and a combined block by Edgington and Adams cut the deficit to 23-21 but the 5-0 run ended with back-to-back SFBK points to end the match.

Adams led SFU's charge with 11 kills, 8 digs, four blocks and two aces. Tyus just missed a double-double with eight kills and nine digs and juniors Shannon Thomas (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) and Logan Belford (Loveland, Colo./Loveland) racked up 16 and 10 digs, respectively.

Saint Francis looks to split the weekend tomorrow at CCSU at 5 p.m.
