Allen and Thomas set career-highs as Red Flash fall to FGCU

Fort Myers, Fla. – Saint Francis sophomore Phee Allen (Newport News, VA/Woodside) scored a career-high 17 points, while Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) added a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, but the Red Flash (1-4) fell to Florida Gulf Coast (5-1) 97-64 on Friday at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena.

Lili Benzel (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle (Shippensburg)) connected on a three-pointer to put SFU ahead 3-2 just over a minute into the game. FGCU then used a 14-2 run to claim a 16-5 lead with 5:20 to play in the first period. A Katie Dettwiller (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) layup followed by another Benzel trey helped the Red Flash trim the lead to 26-16 at the end of the opening stanza.

The Eagles extended their advantage to 40-18 before Thomas sparked a 12-0 SFU run with eight points in the stretch to cut the margin to 40-30 with 1:58 remaining in the second quarter. FGCU held a 45-32 lead at halftime.

Florida Gulf Coast continued its fast paced three-point barrage in the second half as the Eagles stormed out to a 59-38 lead with 5:54 to play in the third period. Allen then scored six of the Red Flash's next eight points as SFU trailed 69-46 with two minutes to go in the frame. FGCU led 76-48 at the end of the third quarter and rolled in the final stanza on their way to the win.

  • Allen was a stellar 7-of-9 from the floor, while knocking down her only three-point attempt. The Newport News, Va. native was 2-of-4 from the free throw line, while adding three rebounds and an assist.
  • Thomas was 7-of-14 from the field, while going 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Her 12 rebounds doubled her previous season-high and edged her previous career-high of 11 boards, which she recorded twice last season.
  • Benzel matched her season-high with 10 points on 3-of-5 from three-point range and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
  • Saint Francis shot a solid 27-of-54 from the floor, including 6-of-18 from behind the three-point arc.
  • The teams were an even 33-33 on the boards.
  • The Red Flash scored exactly 16 points in each of the four quarters.
  • Turnovers haunted SFU as FGCU scored 27 points off 19 Red Flash giveaways.
