Red Flash win double overtime thriller at Vermont, 73-69

Burlington, Vt. – Saint Francis junior Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) scored a team-high 18 points, including two key three-pointers to lift the Red Flash (2-5) to a 73-69 double overtime victory over Vermont (2-6) on Sunday at Patrick Gymnasium. Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) (14 points) and Lili Benzel (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle (Shippensburg)) (12 points) joined her in double-figures.

With 52 seconds to go in regulation, Swogger connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game 55-55 and send it to an extra session. Saint Francis had a chance to win in the first overtime when Thomas came up with the ball off a Vermont inbounds with nine seconds left. She dribbled the length of the court only to have a contested layup roll off the rim at the buzzer.

In the second overtime, the teams traded baskets before Swogger stepped up again in the clutch with a deep triple to put SFU ahead 70-69 with 33 seconds remaining. Phee Allen (Newport News, VA/Woodside) converted on 3-of-4 free throws in the final eight seconds and a defensive stand sealed the win for the Red Flash.

The teams were squared at 13-13 following the first period. Vermont used a 10-0 run to open the second frame with a 23-13 lead. SFU responded to cut the margin to 25-20 following a Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) three-pointer with 2:57 to play in the second quarter. The Catamounts held a 28-22 halftime advantage.

Saint Francis started hot in the third period, taking a 33-32 lead after a Benzel jumper with 6:49 to go in the stanza. Vermont fought back and regained the lead, extending its advantage to 44-39 at the end of the third quarter.

The Red Flash jumped back in front 47-46 on a Benzel layup with 5:48 remaining in the contest. Swogger connected on one of her four three-pointers to put SFU ahead 50-48 with 3:45 to go. Vermont led 55-52 before Swogger knocked down her game-tying triple with under a minute left and the SFU defense held strong to force overtime.
