CLEARWATER, FLA.- Cheyenne McKee's (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) big day at the plate was spoiled by a pair of big innings by Army in a 9-1 setback in the final game of the USF and Clearwater Parks and Rec Showcase.
McKee went 2-3 with a home run and a double to lead the Red Flash offense but a five-run third and four-run sixth by the Black Knights proved too much to overcome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
McKee started off the scoring, hitting a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field wall to give the Red Flash the early lead.
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) followed with a single but would be stranded as SFU took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
Christina Clark (Avon, Ohio/Avon High School) took the bump to start the game for the Red Flash and made quick work of the Black Knights in the first and worked around a walk and a hit batter in the second.
The Black Knights got to Clark and the Red Flash in the third inning, striking for five runs, all with two outs. Army strung together three walks, two singles and a double to plate five runs and end Clark's afternoon.
Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) got the final out of the inning and settled in nicely in relief, retiring the first seven batters she faced. The Red Flash offense got doubles from
MeKenzie Saban (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) in the fifth, but couldn't score in what proved to be their last threat to score.
Army strung together hits in the sixth to put the game away. A single and stolen base was followed by a two-run homer to make it 7-1. The Black Knights ended the game early after a pair of singles, a sacrifice and a double plated the final two runs of the game.
The Red Flash dropped to 8-15 on the season while Army improved to 7-13. Saint Francis will head home and prepare for the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana. Saint Francis will take on Ohio (14-8), Toledo (7-12) and host Indiana (21-3) in a three-day, five-game weekend.
