Red Flash Shoot Down Rockets

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana,- The Red Flash softball team split two games Saturday at the Hoosier Classic. SFU outlasted Toledo 9-7 and fell to Ohio 17-6.

Toledo Recap

·         Meadow Uncapher (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant High School) started in the circle for SFU.

·         The Saint Francis had two baserunners courtesy of a single and walk but were unable to push any advantage from it.

·         Toledo managed a single but Meadow Uncapher (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant High School) shut down the Rockets.

·         In the second inning, Saint Francis managed a walk and a single but a grounder and a fly-out ended the half inning without any runs.

·         Toledo also had a single and a walk but Uncapher maneuvered around the threat.

·         The Red Flash broke the deadlock in the third inning. Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) started off the inning with two singles. Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) hit a sacrifice fly to score her sister. Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) singled to score Norton. Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) finished off the scoring by beating out a grounder to first as Frank, hustling hard, zoomed around third to score. SFU had a 3-0 lead.

·         Toledo used a fielding error and a walk to set a two-run double. Uncapher shut the gates after the fast start.

·         The Red Flash continued the scoring rampage in the fourth inning. Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) reached on an error, MeKenzie Saban (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) singled, and Norton reached on another error that scored Marion. Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) tripled to left field for her 200th hit and two RBIs. Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) followed up with a mammoth, two-run homer. Troxell walked and Crawford doubled to drive in the third baseman. When the dust settled, it was 9-2 SFU.

·         Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. A single up the middle scored the first run. It appeared as if the Red Flash would escape with only that singular run yielded but a glove collusion by Norton and Frank allowed a harmless fly ball to fall in and clear the bases for a 9-6 score. Another walk and a single added to the pressure but Uncapher induced a fly out to Marion.

·         In the top of the fifth inning, SFU was retired in order.

·         Toledo had two baserunners but two fly-outs stranded the runners.

·         Saint Francis, in the sixth inning, had runners on second and third with no outs but were unable to score.

·         Uncapher grounded the Rockets 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

·         SFU couldn't add any insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning.

·         Toledo died hard. A leadoff double and walk chased Uncapher and brought Christina Clark (Avon, Ohio/Avon High School) to the circle. A sacrifice fly scored a run to make 9-7 . A foul out was the second out. A walk placed runners at the corners. Clark rose to the occasion and picked the best timing for the only strikeout of the game by striking out Reed to end the game.

Ohio Recap

·         Mikayla Bower (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) started in the circle for the Red Flash.

·         In the top of the first inning, Ohio struck quickly by smashing a three-run homer.

·         The Red Flash hit two singled but a pop-out and a strikeout extinguished the threat.

·         Christina Clark (Avon, Ohio/Avon High School) entered the circle to start the second inning.

·         Unfortunately, the freshman hurler was clawed as Ohio hit three straight home runs. Uncapher came on in relief. A walk set up a two-run homer. Two more free passes and a single loaded the bases but Uncapher escaped without yielding any more runs to keep the score at 9-0.

·         The Red Flash were retired in order in the bottom of the second inning.

·         Lauren Bertig (Indiana, Pa./Indiana High School) started in the circle for the third inning.

·         Ohio cherished her appearance with a solo home run. A multitude of singles, a walk, and an error added four more runs for a 14-0 advantage.

·         SFU broke through for three runs courtesy of two home runs. Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) hit a solo shot. Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois), not to be outdone by her twin sister, used a Norton walk as an opportunity to double up Cheyenne's accomplishment. It was 14-3 after three innings.

·         The Bobcats got the three runs back in the top of the fourth inning. Bower returned to the circle and was greeted by a home run. A couple of singles and a walk scored the second run. Ohio executed a double steal to earn the third run.

·         Saint Francis made it 17-4 after the second baseman dropped an easy pop-out which allowed Brittney Crawford (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) to score.

·         Ohio didn't score in the fifth inning as Bower allowed only a single.

·         The Red Flash entered the bottom of the fifth inning needing six runs to keep the game going. Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) was hit by a pitch and Allyn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin High School) hit her first collegiate home run with a blast over the left field wall. A Marion groundball ended the game, 17-6.
