Loretto, Pa. – The Saint Francis field hockey team fell to Rider on Sunday, 5-1, snapping a three-match winning streak for the Red Flash.
Rider, who came into the match at 5-2, started quickly by scoring just five minutes into the first quarter. This turned out to be the only first quarter goal, but the Broncs outshot the Red Flash 8-5.
In the second quarter, Rider jumped out to a two-goal lead, scoring four minutes into the period. Shortly after, Saint Francis started to feel a rhythm of its own. Agustina Deharbe (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Catherine's Moorlands) sent a pass to Sharon Kereke (Harare, Zimbabwae/Deerfield Academy), who then sent a pass intended for Carysse Norris (Narvon, Pa./Garden Spot) but was deflected by the defense and past the goalie. The goal was Kereke's second this season and cut the Broncs lead to one. The score stayed at 2-1 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Rider began to pull away. Shots were nearly even in the second half at 8-7 Rider, but the Broncs got the only goal of the third quarter to extend the lead to 3-1, then tallied two more in the fourth for a 5-1 final.
Taylor Nesmith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Red Flash offense with five total shots. Kereke registered four shots on goal. On defense, Claudia Marzec (Whitinsville, Mass./Moses Brown School) made 11 saves.
Next up for the Red Flash is a road trip on Sunday, October 6 for an A-10 conference matchup with VCU.
