SFU uses team effort to defeat Terriers, 67-59

Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. – Saint Francis women's basketball (8-11, 6-2 NEC) used a well-balanced team effort to surge past St. Francis Brooklyn (5-13, 1-6 NEC) in a 67-59 win on Saturday at the Pope Center. Katie Dettwiller (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) recorded a career-high 17 points and nine rebounds, while Jada Dapaa (Potomac, MD/Holy Child) also scored a career-high 12 points.

With the score tied 48-48 with just under five minutes remaining, Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) connected on a three-pointer to give the Red Flash the lead. The shot sparked an 11-2 SFU run over the next three minutes that was capped off with another Mastellone trey to extend the margin to 62-52 with 1:57 to go. The Terriers pulled within five in the final 30 seconds, but wouldn't get any closer as the Red Flash secured the victory.

St. Francis Brooklyn jumped out to an early 10-5 lead with 5:12 to play in the first quarter. SFU cut the margin to 16-12 at the end of the frame following a Dettwiller layup with nine seconds left.

Dettwiller scored the first six points of the second quarter with three straight layups to tie the game 18-18. A Karson Swogger (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood-Antis) layup put the Red Flash ahead 28-27 with 3:31 remaining in the second period. A 6-0 Terriers run gave the hosts a 33-28 lead before Kayley Kovac's (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe Area) layup with 12 seconds to go trimmed St. Francis Brooklyn's halftime advantage to 33-30.

The Terriers took a 37-33 lead in the opening minutes of the third period. SFU then used an 11-2 run that was capped off with a Sam Miller (Red Lion, PA/Dallastown) jumper to give the Red Flash a 44-39 lead with 2:30 to play in the third quarter. St. Francis Brooklyn scored two layups to narrow the margin to 44-43 at the end of the third stanza.

The teams traded baskets over the first three minutes of the fourth frame before Saint Francis took a 48-45 lead following a Swogger jumper with 6:44 remaining in the contest. A Terriers' free throw and layup squared the score at 48-48 and set up the Red Flash surge.
