Red Flash fall to LIU on the road

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Saint Francis women's basketball (8-12, 6-3 NEC) was unable to slow down hot shooting LIU (4-15, 3-5 NEC) as the Red Flash fell to the Sharks 71-53 on Monday at the Steinberg Center. Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) paced SFU with 13 points and eight rebounds.

LIU jumped out to a fast start to take a 12-5 lead with 4:39 to play in the first quarter. A Thomas jumper followed by two free throws cut the margin to 14-11. Saint Francis pulled within one at 17-16 following a Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) three-pointer with 50 seconds to go. The Sharks held a 21-16 lead at the end of the first stanza.

Katie Dettwiller's (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) layup trimmed the Sharks' lead to 28-27 midway through the second period. LIU then used a 7-0 run to push the score to 35-27 with 2:43 to play. A Thomas trifecta with 39 seconds left narrowed the Sharks' lead to 35-30 at halftime.

LIU continued the fast pace in the second half, using a 9-2 run to extend the margin to 44-32 with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter. Mastellone's jumper cut the lead to 49-39 with 2:07 to go. Lili Benzel (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle (Shippensburg)) then connected on a jumper with 35 seconds left as SFU trailed 51-41 at the end of the third frame.

The Sharks opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to go in front 56-41. SFU responded with a 7-0 run to pull within 56-48 on a Phee Allen (Newport News, VA/Woodside) jumper with 5:28 remaining in the contest. The Red Flash trailed 62-53 before LIU closed the game on a 9-0 run to produce the final score.
