Red Flash unable to complete comeback attempt in 56-47 loss at FDU

Teaneck, N.J. – Saint Francis women's basketball (4-10, 2-1 NEC) was unable to complete a second half comeback attempt as the Red Flash fell to Fairleigh Dickinson (5-9, 2-1 NEC) 56-47 on Wednesday at the Rothman Center. Haley Thomas (Hooversville, PA/Bishop McCort) led the Red Flash with 14 points, while Sam Miller (Red Lion, PA/Dallastown) scored 11 points.

SFU jumped out to a 5-3 lead before FDU responded with an 11-0 run to seize a 14-5 advantage with 4:29 to play in the first period. Thomas then scored her second three-pointer of the game to cut into the margin, but the Knights continued their hot shooting and grabbed a 19-9 lead with just over a minute to play. Fairleigh Dickinson held a 22-12 advantage at the end of the first stanza.

Both teams started slow in the second quarter and the Red Flash were held scoreless for the first six minutes. The Knights extended the lead to 29-12 before SFU scored its first points of the period with 3:06 to play. Back-to-back Red Flash layups from Jenna Mastellone (New York City, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Thomas cut the margin to 31-18 with 1:22 remaining. FDU held a 34-20 lead at halftime.

Fairleigh Dickinson opened the scoring in the third period with a three-pointer to take a 37-20 lead before the Red Flash began a comeback attempt. A Katie Dettwiller (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) layup with 7:46 to play sparked a 15-1 Red Flash run that sliced the FDU lead to 38-35 with 2:12 to go in the quarter. The Knights led 43-37 at the end of the third stanza.

The teams continued to trade baskets in the final period as Miller's layup cut the margin to 48-43 with 6:21 remaining in the contest. Following two FDU free throws, a Miller layup made it 50-45 with 3:57 to go. The Knights then scored six straight points to extend the lead to 56-45 with just under a minute left. Another Miller layup with 23 seconds left produced the game's final score.
