Palo Alto, Calif. - The Saint Francis softball team concluded the Demarini Invitational with a 7-2 defeat to the University of Pacific.
Recap
Grace Vesco ( Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) started in the circle for the Red Flash. Once again, the first inning proved to be a tone-setting Waterloo for SFU fortunes as Pacific leaped out to a 2-0 lead. Two singles and a sacrifice bunt placed two runners in scoring position. An error by Emily Nunez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Alta Loma ) allowed the first run to score. A second run was scored on a fielder's choice. Vesco struck a Pacific batter for the third out but the damage was dealt.
SFU struck back in the top of the second inning. Avery Nagle (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) destroyed a pitch for her first collegiate home run. The ball sailed over the right center wall and landed in the middle of the adjunct field hockey stadium. The blow cut the deficit in half.
Alas, in the bottom of the third inning, Pacific increased its advantage. The leadoff hitter singled and stole second. A double scored her. The following single scored the runner after Lauren Aubry (Marengo, Illinois/Marengo) misplaced it. Vesco kept her cool and recorded the final two outs but Pacific was up 4-1.
After SFU could not respond in the top of the fourth inning, Pacific added to the tally with a solo home run over the right field wall.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Pacific scored two more times. A leadoff walk, a fielder's choice, a single, and catcher's interference loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly to Jordan Frank (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) made it 6-1. A single up the middle scored the seventh run but Barnes gunned the relay throw to third base to obtain the third out.
The Red Flash attempted a comeback in the top of the sixth inning. Tayven Rousseau (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) doubled, Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) singled, and Rachel Marsden (Erie, Pa./McDowell) pinch hitting walked to load the bases. Allyn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin High School) was inserted as a pinch hitter and hit into a fielder's choice to score a run. Nagle struck out looking to end the inning.
After Vesco shut down Pacific 1-2-3, the Red Flash had one last chance to counter but only Saban could reach base and a grounder to the third baseman ended the game.
