Red Flash go winless at Michigan Invite

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Saint Francis water polo team (4-10) went 0-4 at the Michigan Invite against difficult competition.

Saint Francis opened its week with a 22-11 loss to Long Beach State despite four goals from freshman Taylor Halbauer (Edmonton, Canada/Mother Maragret Mary) and three from senior Erin O'Neill (Landsdale, Pa/North Penn).

The Red Flash played No. 15 Long Beach State tight over the first period, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by O'Neill and Halbauer. The teams were deadlocked at 4-4 entering the second period and SFU thwarted off a 4-0 run to get two back before the half to make it 8-6. SFU's defense proved penetrable in the third period as the Red Flash were outscored 10-3 and never recovered. Long Beach State outshot Saint Francis 38-20 for the match. Sophomore Rosalinda Rivera (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn High School) made eight saves in goal.

Freshman Addison Williams (Clovis, Calif/Sanger High School ) netted a hat trick in SFU's next game, but it wasn't enough as the Red Flash fell to Bucknell 10-5. O'Neill opened the scoring just as she did in the game before, but Bucknell rattled off the next five goals. Freshman goalie Heather Jacobsen did her best to keep SFU in the match, finishing with six saves. Three second half goals from WIlliams made things interesting but Saint Francis never cut it any closer than five over the second half.

Williams stayed hot in SFU's next contest, a 13-7 loss to Santa Clara, leading the Red Flash with four goals. Halbauer also found the back of the net twice.

Saint Francis tried to overcome a slow start, cutting a 10-3 halftime deficit to 11-6 after three periods. The Broncos answered with two goals early in the fourth period to stretch the lead to 13-6.

The Red Flash wrapped up its week with a 10-6 loss to Iona. Five different Saint Francis players found the net for the Red Flash with Williams scoring a team-high two goals.

Williams scored both of her goals in the first period as SFU trailed 4-2 after one. SFU trailed 10-4 late in the third period before Halbauer found the net. A goal early in the fourth period from sophomore Julia Bradford (Edinboro, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) cut the deficit to 10-6, but Saint Francis was held scoreless over the remainder of the match.

Williams finished the week with nine goals and Halbauer added eight. Saint Francis heads West to California next week to compete in the Claremont Convergence from Mar. 6 - 8.
