Volleyball Falls to Long Island on Friday

» Saint Francis University women's volleyball dropped 3-0 on the road to the Sharks of Long Island University on Friday evening.
» The match was a back-and-forth battle with both programs taking the lead on several occasions and requiring two extended sets within the game.
» Kimmy Sweeney (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) recorded a double-double in the match with 38 assists and 12 digs.
 

TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME
The extended third set was no different than the first two sets in that both teams battled in long rallies to earn each point. The Sharks had control for the majority of the third set. However, after yet another kill from Nicole Adams (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa East), the Red Flash were able to tie the set 22-22. The set continuing to tie, had to be extended and ultimately Long Island was able to claim the third and final set, 26-24 to earn the three-set victory over the Red Flash.

FLASH MOMENTS
With the first set tied 8-8, a kill from Adams gave the Red Flash its first lead of the night and only lead of the first set to make the score 9-8. However, the Sharks went on a 2-0 run to make score 11-9. Long Island would continue to maintain the lead until a kill from Madi Tyus (Plano, Texas/Bishop Lynch) tied the set at 16-16. However, the Sharks bounced right back to go on a 3-0 run to make the score 16-19, but the Red Flash were not finished yet. With an attack error from Long Island followed by back-to-back kills from Adams, the Red Flash tied the set again to make the score 19-19. The first set continued to be a battle with both teams taking its turn scoring. However, the Sharks were able to claim the first, 25-22.

The extended second set was as an all-out battle with both teams taking the lead on several occasions. With the second set tied 10-10, a kill and service ace from Adams put the Red Flash on top. Although the Sharks tied on a few occasions again in this set, Saint Francis never allowed Long Island to take the lead again in the second set until the very end of the set to make the score 22-21. With both teams continuing to battle it out, the Sharks were able to win out the extended second set, 28-26.

FLASH NUGGETS
Tyus and Adams recorded double digit kills for the 23rd game this season. Adams had 17 kills and Tyus collected 14 in the match.

Three-time NEC Rookie of the Week, Maggie Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) came right in behind her senior leaders with ten kills on the day.

Hogan and her fellow rookie, Maggie Means (Connellsville, Pa./ Connellsville Area) each recorded two serving aces a piece in the game. Means also collected double-digit digs for the 15th consecutive game on Friday with 12 digs.

UP NEXT
Before the Red Flash travel to Providence, R.I. for the Northeast Conference tournament, the squad will compete in its last regular season game on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 6:00 p.m. to take on the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn in N.Y.
