PRINCESS ANNE, MD.- Saint Francis University claimed a 3-1 victory over Hampton University to close out the women's volleyball Hawk Invitational on Saturday.
Maggie Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) and
Maggie Means (Connellsville, Pa./ Connellsville Area) both earned All-Tournament honors after each of their knock-out performances in the Hawk Invitational Friday and Saturday. Hogan collected 25 kills, 11 digs and 27.5 points overall in the tournament. Whereas Means collected 25 digs, five assists and one ace in her standout performance.
There were quite a few freshman standouts in the match that ultimately led Saint Francis women's volleyball to capitalize on a victory.
Drew Wallech (Hagerstown Md./North Hagerstown) absolutely dominated in her first ever Red Flash performance, leading the team by collecting four serving aces and four blocks in the match.
While Hogan continued to surpass her own personal record book by recording 13 kills on the day,
Nicole Adams (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa East) registered 17 kills and
Madi Tyus (Plano, Texas/Bishop Lynch) had 14 kills on the day.
Freshman
Emma Fenton (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) topped her career high in the match by gathering 16 assists to follow closely in line with senior standout
Kimmy Sweeney (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Beaumont School) who collected 25 assists.
The first set was a back and forth battle between the two teams. However, it was the freshman duo with a kill from Hogan, assisted by Fenton that clinched the first set for squad, 25-23.
The second set was completely controlled by the Red Flash with the team going on a 5-0 lead and never looking back to claim the set, 25-17.
Although the Pirates of Hampton University claimed the third set, 25-19. The Red Flash clinched the fourth set, 25-23. It was ultimately the combined kills from Adams, Tyus and Hogan that allowed Saint Francis to win the set and claim the victory over Hampton University.
The Red Flash will return to Loretto on Friday, September 24 to take on St. Francis Brooklyn to open up conference play. Game time is 7 p.m.
