BUFFALO, N.Y. - With just under 19 minutes to play in the game and the score tied 1-1, Saint Francis found itself on a breakaway. Dashing down the field Dallan Schoenberger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) made a great cross that found senior midfielder, Elie Lubino (Guadeloupe, France/Lycee Tezenas Du Montcel), who put the ball in the back of the net for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory against Canisius College in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday.
In a game where the Red Flash only gave up three shots, the one shot on goal proved to be a crucial one when a foul in the box gave the Golden Griffins a penalty kick that they would bury to give themselves a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
After several missed chances in the first half, the Flash came out and took control in the second half. After three more shots in the second half failed to get the Red Flash even, Patrick Heron (Lauder, Scotland/Earlston) took a pass from Jeff Thielmann (Bad Homburg, Germany/Ngo Bockenheim) scored to put Saint Francis on the board in the 62nd minute.
Saint Francis was able to put up 24 shots, 10 of those being on goal. That is the second most shots on goal put up this season, only behind the overtime loss to Duquesne. The squad has not shot the ball 24 times since the first round of the 2019 NEC tournament against Fairleigh Dickinson.
For Saint Francis, they've now won three of their last four matches and have moved to 3-2 on the year with one game left of non-conference play on Wednesday, September 22 against Robert Morris at 4:00 p.m. at the Stokes Soccerplex.
