Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller at IUPUI

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Saint Francis Women's Volleyball lost in a five-set thriller to IUPUI on Friday evening.
 
>> Freshmen Outside Hitter Kori McClure (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) secured a triple-double in the match with 13 kills, 15 assists and 12 digs.
 
>> Aubrey Deptula (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton Community) secured a new single game career high of six service aces on the day.
 
>> Korrin Burns (Shippenville, Pa./Clarion Area) led the Red Flash in kills with 13 on the day.
 
TURNING POINT OF THE GAME
With the game tied 2-2, a fifth set was required. The fifth set started off completely in favor of IUPUI. However, with the Red Flash down 9-4, the team went on a 6-1 run that featured kills from McClure and Hogan, along with a service ace from Skye Eicher (Rostraver Township, Pa./Frazier). The final set continued to be a battle but ended in favor of IUPUI with an extended set score of 17-15.
 
FLASH MOMENTS
The Jaguars took the 2-1 lead to start the match. However, the Red Flash responded with a 5-0 run that featured a kill and two service aces from Deptula to have the 6-2 lead over IUPUI. The Jaguars came back to tie the first set and take the lead. With the Red Flash down 22-17 the team went on an 8-1 run to come back and take the first set, 25-23.
 
The second set was a back-and-forth battle between both volleyball programs. With the Red Flash down by two late in the second set at a score of 19-17, the team went on a 3-0 run that saw a kill from Eicher and a block from Deptula and Burns. With the second set tied 22-22, a kill from Eicher, an attack error from the Jaguars and finally a service ace from Deptula secured the second set for the Red Flash, 25-22.
 
FLASH NUGGETS
The Jaguars started off the fourth set with a 5-1 run over the Red Flash. With Saint Francis down 8-4, the team put up a 5-0 run that gave the team the lead to make the score 10-8 thanks to kills from Deptula and Burns and two service aces from Maggie Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria). However, the fourth set continued be a back-and-forth battle, but ended in favor of the Jaguars with a score of 25-19 to push for the fifth set.
 
The Jaguars controlled the majority of the third set. It was a 6-0 run that allowed the IUPUI team to claim the third set with a score of 25-18.
 
UP NEXT
The Red Flash will continue in Indianapolis on Saturday, Sept. 3 for two games to close out the Hampton Inn Invite by taking on Montana at 10 a.m. and Drake at 3:30 p.m.
