Volleyball Drops Two Matches on Saturday

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Saint Francis women's volleyball dropped 3-0 to Montana and 3-1 to Drake on Saturday to close out the Hampton Inn Invitational at IUPUI.
 
>> Maggie Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) led the Red Flash in kills with 24 on the day and matched her single-game career high of 17 kills in the match against Drake. Freshman Korrin Burns (Shippenville, Pa./Clarion Area) followed closely behind with 14 kills Saturday.
 
>> Allison Murray (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded a new single-game career high of 14 kills in the team's match to Drake. While Aubrey Deptula (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton Community) put up a new career high of 23 total attacks against Drake.
 
TURNING POINT GAME 1 VS MONTANA
The Red Flash started off the match with a 2-0 run from an attack error on the Griz and a service ace from Burns. However, the Montana team came back to take the lead and never again allow the Red Flash to lead again in the first set for the Griz to clinch set one, 25-15. Despite losing set one, this set saw 13 total attacks from Kori McClure (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North). Winning set one was the fuel the Griz needed to go and claim the next two sets.
 
FLASH MOMENTS GAME 1 VS MONTANA
The Griz started the second set with a 7-0 run to never allow the Red Flash to lead in the second set. Saint Francis came within three to make the score 12-9 thanks to kills from Murray and Burns. However, Montana was able to keep its lead to secure the second set, 25-13.
 
FLASH NUGGETS GAME 1 VS MONTANA
The third set was more of the same with the Griz maintaining the lead for the Montana team to secure the third and final set, 25-20. Despite losing the third set, the Red Flash had a very strong run towards the end of the third set. With the team down, 23-17, a 3-1 run with kills from Drew Wallech (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Deptula, along with a service ace from Deptula put the Red Flash back in the race.
 
Wallech recorded her first career solo block in the match against Montana.
 
TURNING POINT GAME 2 VS DRAKE
Drake was fueled from winning the third set to be able to control the majority of the fourth set. The Bulldogs maintained its lead for the entire fourth set. The Red Flash did manage to tie the set up on two occasions in the fourth. Drake secured the fourth and final set, 25-17.
 
FLASH MOMENTS GAME 2 VS DRAKE
With the Red Flash down 10-9, a 5-0 run that featured kills from Murray and Hogan and a service ace from Wallech gave the team the four-point advantage over the Bulldogs to make the score 14-10. Although Drake came back to tie the second set on several occasions, the Red Flash maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the second set. With the second set tied at 22, a kill from Deptula, a service ace from Hogan and an attack error from the Bulldogs clinched the second set for the Red Flash at a score of 25-22 to tie match at 1-1.
 
FLASH NUGGETS GAME 2 VS DRAKE
Back-to-back service aces from Hogan gave the Red Flash the 3-2 lead, but the first set continued to be a back-and-forth battle between both volleyball programs with four tied scores and two lead changes throughout. However, a 9-2 run from Bulldogs pushed the Drake volleyball team to secure the first set, 25-15.
 
The Red Flash gained a four-point advantage over the Bulldogs early in the third set to make the score 6-2 but Drake responded with a 4-0 run to tie the set at six. However, the Red Flash held the Bulldogs from taking the lead until later in the third set for the Drake team to get ahead by two and make the score 12-10. The third set continued to be a fight for each team with seven tied scores and three lead changes. An 8-0 run from the Bulldogs gave Drake the third set at a score of 25-17.
 
UP NEXT
The Red Flash will now turn its attention to a fellow Pa. matchup to the Dukes of Duquesne on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6 p.m.
