Men’s Soccer to Welcome LIU for Midweek NEC Contest

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Saint Francis men's soccer (4-0-6, 2-0-2 NEC) welcomes Northeast Conference opponent LIU to the Stokes Soccerplex Thursday, October 19 for a 3:00 p.m. contest.

LAST TIME OUT
The Red Flash ended Sunday's match against Le Moyne in a 1-1 draw. Sophomore Charlie Lucero scored the lone goal for the team, notching the first of his career.
 
With the draw, the team extended their unbeaten streak to 10 which is the longest in a single season in program history.

THE WORD ON THE SHARKS
LIU is 5-4-3 overall and 2-0-2 in the NEC with eight points. The Sharks currently sit in third place in the conference. The program is under the direction of head coach Michael Mordocco who is in his seventh season with the Sharks. LIU has picked up wins against Stony Brook (2-1), UConn (2-0), VMI (4-0) and Sacred Heart (2-1). The Sharks are coming into Thursday's match following a NEC victory against Howard, 3-1.
 
Senior Emil Jaaskelainen leads the Sharks offensively with 13 points which comes from four goals and five assists on the season. The forward currently leads the NEC in shots taken with 61. Jaaskelainen entered the 2023 season ranked fifth overall in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer in their preseason DI player rankings and was named the 2022 NEC Player of the Year.
 
Redshirt junior Ben Assane Fall is tied with Jaaskelainen with 13 points on the season. Fall scored the match winning goal in the 10th minute in the Shark's win against UConn last month.
 
Graduate student goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski has started nine matches in net for the Sharks the season. He has allowed 13 goals this season and registered 30 saves. Gawronski has kept two clean sheets.
 
The Sharks were picked to finish second in the NEC's Preseason Coaches Poll.

LAST TIME WE MET
The Red Flash defeated the Sharks in New York last season in a 1-0 shutout victory. Quinn O'Hearn scored the match winning goal in the second half. In 2021, Saint Francis defeated LIU in Loretto in a 3-2 victory.
 
Saint Francis has won the last two meetings against LIU, leading the series 2-1 all-time.
