LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis University field hockey head coach Maria Bettiana Ceretta has announced the hiring of Meghan Heary as an assistant coach.
"I am excited to welcome Meghan to Saint Francis as our new assistant coach," said Ceretta. "I have known Meghan for a long time, I coached her, and I followed her coaching career after finishing college. She will be a great asset for developing excellence in the field and classroom. I can't wait to start working together to continue growing the program to the next level."
Heary comes to Loretto after serving as an assistant at Kenyon for the last year. She assisted the Owls to a 10-7 record and ended the season on a three-game winning streak. She coached four players that earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors, 12 players named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Squad and three NFHCA Scholars of Distinction.
"I am so excited to join the Saint Francis field hockey program," said Heary. "Thank you to Betta for the opportunity to join the coaching staff and the department for being so welcoming during the hiring process. I can't wait to start working with the team this spring!"
She got her start in coaching at her alma mater, York College of Pennsylvania, with a two-year stint from July 2020-February 2022. After her first season as an assistant coach with the Spartans was cancelled due to COVID-19, she helped the team to a 14-5 record. Five players were named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth team, including two first-team selections, along with two players named to the NFHCA All-Region team. In the classroom, 18 York players were selected to the NFHCA Academic Squad and four earned NFHCA Scholars of Distinction honors.
A four-year letterwinner at York, she was named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference second team in 2019, the same season she served as team captain. For her career, she appeared in 75 games with 62 starts, eight goals and seven assists for 23 points, while helping her team to a 45-20 record in her four seasons. The Chester Springs, Pa., native notched the game-winning goal against Mary Washington to send the Spartans to the CAC Semifinals in her senior year. Heary also excelled in the classroom after being named to the NFHCA Academic Squad all four years. She served as her Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) vice president in her senior year.
She graduated magna cum laude with a middle level education degree from York in 2020 and is finishing up her master's degree for Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership at Messiah College in the spring.
