Softball Drops Final Two Games at Palmer Park Clash

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Saint Francis University softball fell 5-2 to Virginia after a 9-1 loss in five innings to George Mason in its final day at the Palmer Park Clash.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
» Grace Vesco (5-3) went all-six innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts in the loss to Virginia.
» Rachel Marsden (1-7) went three innings and took the loss against George Mason after she allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.
» Jordan Pietrzykoski went 2-for-5 and scored one run against Virginia.
» Annabelle Farmer went 2-for-3 against Virginia.
 
TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME (GM)
» Savannah Nash opened the scoring in the second inning with a triple to deep center field that drove home Marsden. George Mason responded in the third inning with five runs off a three-run double, error and double.
» In the fourth inning, the Patriots singled and hit a sacrifice fly to open a 7-1 lead. In the fifth inning, George Mason hit a two-tun double to clinch its run-rule victory.
 
TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME (UVA)
» After two scoreless innings, Virginia broke through for the game's first run on a wild pitch and took a 1-0 lead in the third. In the fifth inning, a two-run home run and two-run triple gave the Cavaliers a 5-0 lead.
» In the sixth inning, Saint Francis loaded the bases with three singles, followed by an Ashley Wruble walk. One runner was thrown out at second on a single. Marsden followed with a hit-by-pitch that drove in one run and Olivia Ulam drove in another with a single to cut the deficit to 5-2.
» Saint Francis produced one more baserunner in the seventh inning before Virginia clinched its victory.

FLASH NUGGETS
» Farmer recorded her second multi-hit game of the season after she had her first on Feb. 18 against Elon. The game against Virginia was the fifth start of her career at catcher.
» Vesco allowed three earned runs on six hits and recorded 22 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched this weekend.

UP NEXT
Saint Francis has its final tournament on the non-conference season from March 10-12 at South Florida.
