Saint Francis Women's Soccer Falls To Youngstown State 3-1 In Season Opener

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> The Saint Francis women's soccer team came up short against Youngstown State in their first match of the 2023 campaign, 3-1.
>> Raine Korpics (Walnutport, Pa.) scored the first goal of the season for Saint Francis on an assist from Tomke Dziesiaty (Tornesch, Germany).
>> The Red Flash were out shot 12-4 by the Penguins. Saint Francis were in their defensive zone for much of the opening half
>> Emma Sawich (McMurray, Pa.) made her first start in net since 2021 and made three saves for the Red Flash.

TURNING POINTS OF THE GAME
Saint Francis and Youngstown State each had a goal in the first hour. The Penguins found the back of the net in the 68th minute to pull in front for good. Youngstown State would add an insurance goal in the 85th minute.

FLASH MOMENTS
Korpics scored the first goal of the campaign for the Red Flash when she capitalized on an open goal and drew Saint Francis level. Dziesiaty created the chance on the wing to draw the goalkeeper out. Korpics and Dziesiaty both won conference awards last season and are off and running in the young campaign.

In the 35th minute, goalkeeper Sawich charged the ball for an excellent sliding clearance in a one-on-one chance. 

FLASH NUGGETS
Korpics led the Red Flash with two shots for the night, one on goal. After going down 2-1, the Red Flash outshot the Penguins 3-1.
 
Riley Cerqua (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Caterina Schiavo (Sicklerville, Pa.), Cameron Collins (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Sophia Filipowski (Hockessin, Del.), Aixa Helbringer-Escobar (Santiago, Chile) and Mercedez Paino (Langhorne, Pa.) all made their collegiate debuts in the contest.

UP NEXT
Saint Francis will head down to Morgantown, W. Va., to face West Virginia in their first road game of the season on Sunday. The Red Flash will kick off against the Mountaineers at 1:00 p.m.
