Men’s Soccer Opens Season with Home Victory

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> The Saint Francis men's soccer team opened the 2023 regular season with a 2-1 victory over nonconference Canisius Thursday afternoon at the Stokes Soccerplex.
 
>> Saint Francis' scoring efforts were led by Álvaro Planas (Valladolid, Spain) and Andre Isreal (Clarksburg, Md.) each with one goal. Both netted their first score of the season and in their collegiate careers.
 
>> The Red Flash move to 1-0 on the season.

TURNING POINT OF THE GAME
The opening 39 minutes were scoreless, controlled slightly more by the Red Flash as they recorded four shots to the Griffins' two. Junior Maximus Rigby (York, England) sent a pass up to freshman Planas who netted Saint Francis' first score to take a one-goal lead.

FLASH MOMENT
In a solid offensive push in the second half, Joschi Schelb (Freiburg, Germany) assisted Isreal to continue the Red Flash lead, 2-0.

FLASH NUGGETS
>> Saint Francis held the advantage over Canisius in shots on goal 6-4, while the Griffins held advantage in corner kicks 5-0. Both teams ended the match with nine shots a piece.
 
>> Leading the offensive efforts for the Red Flash were Rigby and Schelb with two shots on target.
 
>> Sophomore goalkeeper Jordaine Jaeger (Munich, Germany) registered two saves in the 90 minutes.
 
>> With the win, Mads Kaiser collects his first ever victory as a head coach.
 
>> Freshmen Fabian Wagner, Schelb and Planas all made their collegiate debuts during Thursday's match. Charlie Lucero (Aurora, Colo.), Mikey Chiha (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Isreal all registered their first ever collegiate starts in the contest.
