Men’s Soccer to Conclude Nonconference Play at Longwood

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Saint Francis men's soccer team (2-0-3) will conclude nonconference play at Longwood on Saturday, September 16 at 3:00 p.m. in Farmville, Virginia.

LAST TIME OUT
The Red Flash took a 1-0 shutout victory against nonconference Bucknell to add to their undefeated streak. In the 71st minute, freshman midfielder Joschi Schelb made a pass to sophomore forward Patrick Heron who drove the ball up the right sideline. Heron crossed the ball to freshman forward Fabian Wagner who bicycle kicked the ball into the net past the Bison's goalkeeper to score the match winner.

The goal was Wagner's first goal of his collegiate career. Schelb leads the Northeast Conference in points with eight and assists with four on the season. Schelb is also tied for eighth in the nation in total assists.

THE WORD ON THE LANCERS
Longwood is 3-1-1 on the season under the direction of experienced head coach Jon Atkinson who is in 21st season with the Lancers. This season Longwood has won against DIII program Hampden-Sydney College (3-0), former NEC member Mount St. Mary's (2-1) and Navy (1-0). They drew against William & Mary (1-1) and most recently were given their first loss of the season by Liberty (1-3).

Longwood added 18 new faces to their roster and return 12 from last year's 2-10-5 squad. Redshirt junior Emilio Segovia leads the Lancers with six points coming from two goals and two assists on the season. Senior Mason Butcher is the next leading scorer with two goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Max Hinke returns in net for the Lancers. Hinke has started every match this season and registered 15 saves. The goalkeeper has also preserved two clean sheets.

Longwood was voted to finish fifth in the Big South's preseason men's soccer poll with one first place vote.

LAST TIME WE MET
The Red Flash defeated the Lancers in a competitive 2-1 match last season at the Stokes Soccerplex. Saturday's match will be just the second time the Red Flash and the Lancer's face off.
