LORETTO, Pa. – Saint Francis men's and women's track & field head coach Douglas Hoover announced the hiring of former Red Flash sprinter Christopher Frederick as assistant track & field coach. His main responsibility will be the development and recruitment of the sprint and hurdle events.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Chris back to Loretto," Hoover said. "He is well-prepared for his new role on our coaching staff. He had a tremendously successful career here as an undergraduate student, and his coaching experience the last two years has prepared him to lead our sprinters and hurdlers. He's going to do great things here."
Frederick had been an assistant coach for the track & field teams at Seton Hill University for the last two seasons. He was in charge of the development of sprinters and hurdlers. In his two years with the Griffins, he contributed to 27 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying marks in indoor/outdoor sprint and hurdle events, along with two runner-up finishes in the 200m and 400m races during the 2022 PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Frederick coached sprinter Joseph Piper, who broke the Seton Hill 200m dash record with a time of 21.66 during the 2023 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He also coached Andrew Campbell to a 10.86 mark in the 100m dash, good for second in program history.
Frederick joins a coaching staff that, along with Hoover, consists of assistant coaches Chris Carper and DJ Horton.
"The chemistry I knew I had with the coaches is why I came here, and I am excited to be back at Saint Francis," Frederick said. "They've already been settled and have done a good job here. I feel like this is home and that I have unfinished business."
Frederick ran for the Saint Francis track & field team from 2017-21. He is one of the most accomplished runners in the program's history, holding school records in the 200m dash indoors and outdoors. He accumulated seven All-Northeast Conference (NEC) outdoor/indoor team selections. He also holds nine top-10 marks on the SFU all-time performance list. Finally, he was named the 2019 NEC Outdoor Most Outstanding Track Performer in sprints and 2018 NEC Outdoor Most Outstanding Rookie.
He was also a part of the 2019 Men's Outdoor Track & Field NEC Championship Team, finishing first in the 100m dash, 200m dash, and being a part of the winning 4x100 relay team and the runner-up 4x400m relay team.
While at Seton Hill, Frederick earned his Master of Education in Innovation Instruction. During his time as an undergraduate at Saint Francis, he received his BS in Social Work.
