Women's Volleyball Falls to Duquesne and Towson

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
>> Women's volleyball dropped their opening match to Duquesne in three sets (19-25, 16-25, 21-25). In their match against Towson, they fell in five sets (16-25, 25-22, 25-19, 16-25, 8-15).

>> Maggie Hogan led the team in kills against Duquesne with 15. Aaliyah Toppin recorded 16 kills against Towson to take a team-most in the match.

TURNING POINTS
Down two sets to Duquesne, the Dukes continued their momentum to take the match. The Red Flash mounted a comeback at a 23-21 score, but a Duquesne kill set up match point, with a Saint Francis error closing the match.

After tying the match in the fourth set, momentum stayed with Towson in the fifth set. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead. The Red Flash tried to get out in front of the home team, but a four-point run by Towson kept them out of reach for Saint Francis, continuing to pull ahead for a 15-8 set win.

FLASH MOMENTS
Down 17-7 to the Dukes in set one, a five-point run gave the Red Flash some momentum. Hogan had three consecutive kills, with an assist from Emma Fenton and two more by Alexandra Sappia. After an error by Duquesne, Hogan dealt another kill, drawing a timeout from the Dukes.

Late in the third set, Saint Francis went on a four-point run to stay in the match. Coming out of a timeout at 21-16, Toppin earned the side out on a kill before recording an ace. Hogan tallied two more kills to narrow Duquesne's lead to 21-20.

After the Tigers took the opening set, the Red Flash came back with a vengeance to win set two. To tie the set at four apiece, Ava Holden and Alyssa Irwin blocked an attack by Towson. After errors by the Tigers, Toppin notched a kill to extend the lead to 7-4. Fenton scored on back-to-back aces, forcing Towson to take a timeout. Holden and Irwin registered another block out of the timeout before a Red Flash error gave the Tigers the side out, up 10-5. An ace by Sappia later in the set earned set point at 24-17, with Irwin notching the set-winning kill.

The Red Flash took advantage of Tiger errors in the third set to take the lead. Up only 8-7, a service error began the five-point run. After an attack error, Hogan earned a kill. Hogan was then joined on a block with Laney Wilson before Towson took a timeout. Coming out of the break, an attack error by the Tigers gave the Red Flash a 13-7 lead, which they would hold on to the rest of the set.

FLASH NUGGETS
In her first match for Saint Francis, Irwin tallied seven kills against Duquesne.

Sappia led in assists in the first match of the day with 25.

Raegan Rosi tallied nine digs to lead the Red Flash versus the Dukes.

Against Towson, Hogan took second on the team in kills with 13.

Toppin also led the Red Flash in digs with 14, good for her first collegiate double-double.

Defensively, Holden, Irwin and Wilson each tallied five assisted blocks in the match against Towson.

UP NEXT
The Red Flash will face Lehigh and Morgan State in the second day of the Towson-Morgan State Invitational, playing the Mountain Hawks at 10 a.m. and the Bears at 6 p.m.
