Shelby Ricks, a member of the Saint Francis women's basketball team, has been named an NEC Prime Performer for the week of January 5-11.
Ricks averaged 17.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, and had 29 points and eight rebounds in a 75-67 win against Wagner on Thursday to give the Red Flash its first win of the season. The 29 points are tied for the second-most points scored in a game this season in the NEC. The graduate student posted 13 points in the second quarter on 3-for-4 shooting, 3 of 3 from behind the arc, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line to help Saint Francis to a 39-26 lead and give the Red Flash its most points in the first half and second most in a half this season. She then had nine points in the fourth quarter to help seal the Saint Francis win after Wagner trimmed the margin to five points. Ricks added six points and six rebounds against LIU on Saturday. Ricks shot 45.5 percent from the floor (10-for-22), 7 of 9 from behind the arc (77.8), and 100 percent from the free throw line (8-for-8) in the two games. Ricks has registered double figures in five of the last seven games with two 20-point performances since the start of NEC play. She also had five tilts with at least six boards and two double-doubles. The graduate student is averaging 14.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in that stretch. She also had three blocks for the second time this season after recording three rejections against Maine on November 29.
The graduate student ranks sixth in the NEC in scoring (11.9 ppg.), fifth in 3-point percentage (37.8), fifth in blocked shots (0.86 bpg.), seventh in defensive rebounds (4.36 rpg.), and 10th in rebounding (6.1 rpg.)
Ricks now leads the team with four Prime Performers, receiving recognition on November 17, December 14, December 21, and January 12, while
Aleah James (November 10, December 14) and
Sonia Sato (November 24) have also been honored by the league.
Saint Francis returns to action with two games in New England, starting at Stonehill on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
