Senior Kelly Dowuona (Brampton, Ontario, St. Marguerite d'Youville), sophomore Kevin Titus Suresh (Bengaluru, India, Clarence), and senior Gregory Troyan (Los Angeles, Culver City), members of the Saint Francis tennis team, were named the NEC women's player of the week and men's prime performers, respectively. This marks the second time Dowuona has won player of the week and the ninth time she has earned the prime performer award. This is Suresh's fourth time receiving the award, while it is Troyan's first time this season and in his career.
This season, Dowuona cemented her legacy at Saint Francis by becoming the all-time leader in combined wins and, as of Friday, Sept. 6, the all-time leader in singles matches with 59 victories. She currently has a 9-10 singles record, ranking third on the team. In her last match against Duquesne, the upperclassman defeated her opponent in the third spot in two sets, with a final score of 6-3, 6-3.
So far this season, Suresh has been the driving force at the top of the Saint Francis men's tennis lineup, earning him the nickname "The King" for his dominant performance. Currently, the underclassman leads the team with a 12-6 record. His most recent match came against NEC foe Le Moyne, where he took his opponent to a third set, claiming victory with a final score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Senior Troyan aims to make his final year his finest, playing well in the No. 2 spot just behind his doubles partner, Suresh. Nicknamed "The Captain," the upperclassman currently has a 5-8 singles record and a 10-6 doubles record. In his last match against the Dolphins, he handled his opponent in two sets, winning both with a final score of 6-2 and 6-4.
The Red Flash men's tennis team is back in action this weekend as they compete in a three-match series. The first match is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, against Carnegie Mellon at the Rashid Hassan Tennis Center in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. The Saint Francis women's tennis team will also be in action this weekend, taking on Bucknell at the Central PA Tennis Center in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, at 6 p.m.
